Hello everyone,
I am newly registered on the site because I need help. Thank you to anyone who will take an interest in my case.
The problem concerns my daughter's laptop (Toshiba Satellite 1410, Windows XP Home SP2).
I recently had to reinstall Windows. Almost immediately, the CD drive became inaccessible (but it seems that the problem already existed before, randomly). It is recognized in Explorer, the control panel says everything is OK and that it is functioning well. But when we click on E:/DVD/CD-RW drive (whether or not there is a CD in the drive), a window opens displaying:
"Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be damaged or it may be using a format that is not compatible with Windows."
(I saw in the forum history an old message that talked about this same error message, and which indicated that it appeared following the installation of a burning software (Nero), but there was no reply).
In the Event Viewer of the Administrative Tools, the attempt to launch the CD drive generates a CD-Rom error message that specifies:
"The device \Device\CdRom0 has a bad block." It leads to the Microsoft help center, with no results (sorry...). I also find in the error message a window that displays a few lines of bytes (that must be the bad block).
I uninstalled the burning software, enabled and disabled the Windows burning module, with no effect.
Does anyone have an idea? Where can I find this \Device\CdRom0 ??
Thank you for your help. 3 message(s) posted since Sunday, January 13, 2008

Hello guycec,

I'm going to try to help you...
Have you checked the DEVICE MANAGER?
Then under CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives
Your system will tell you if there's a hardware problem!

Hello lenrok and thank you
Yes, of course, and everything is fine. That's what bothers me, the only error messages are about Windows not wanting to use the drive, and this \device\cdrom0
