Hello everyone
I have a Power Macintosh G3, with a formatted hard drive and I would like to install Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), but I don't have a Mac keyboard and mouse. I plugged in my HP keyboard and mouse via USB, and they work fine, but I can't open the CD drive during the operating system installation because there is no CD eject button. I would like to know if there is another key or technique to open it without a Mac keyboard.

if this Mac is already running OS 10,
If you don't have the Eject icon in the menu bar, go here:
Hard Drive / System / Library / CoreServices / Menu Extras and double-click on the file "Eject.menu".
You can take this opportunity to add any desired icons to the Finder menu bar.
If you want to remove an icon added by mistake, simply drag it out of the menu bar while holding down the Command key, or its equivalent on your keyboard.

You can also force Spotlight to search more precisely.
Do it like this:
-In Finder, press “Command + Spacebar + F”
-in the following window, if any search criteria are present, delete them by clicking the “-” button
-then in the bar indicating the choice of search locations, click on “Other”
-In the window that pops up, click on the “+” button at the bottom of the window
-now navigate to the “Library” folder found in the “System” folder at the root of the hard drive.
-Now in the search window, the “Library Folder” should be selected
-type “Eject.menu” in the search area and if the file is found, select it and at the bottom of the window, you will have its exact location

I hope I'm not saying something foolish, to be honest, I'm not sure if Spotlight is present in 10.3.9... my memories are not clear on this subject :)

In my message above, I forgot a very important detail: if this Mac has never been under Mac OS 10, but only under OS 9, it is imperative to check if its firmware needs an update before any installation of any system 10.

Without a keyboard, there's the mouse left.
If this Mac is running OS 10 and the CD is visible on the screen, I believe dragging it to the trash is sufficient.
Under OS 922 as well.

What Micka is saying is that during the installation he cannot eject his CD, which is very often the case during installations since the trash is not available. However, quite often the CD ejects itself when the next CD is requested; but again, this may not be the case, depending on the exact type of Mac and/or the OS being installed.

Uh! I have a problem interpreting Micka's post: I understood that he couldn't open the drive and therefore couldn't insert a disk even before starting the installation... On certain towers, it seems to me that we could open this drive either with the eject button or by applying moderate pressure on the tray itself, with the latter method not being immune to random strikes ;-)
Specifically for Sanspseudo: I searched on my iMac G5 10.3.9 for what you described above:
Hard Drive / System / Library / CoreServices / Menu Extras / "Eject.menu"
and I didn't find it either by following this path or by using Sherlock... What do you think, Doctor? Thank you for reassuring me... well, we'll manage.

For Micka, he does say "during the installation", but there may be a misunderstanding..
It's true that on desktop Macs the way to open/eject the tray is not always the same. I've had disc drives with a small hole for a paperclip (iMac G3), others with a tray and a push button (PowerMac 7300), or even disc drives with nothing else but the eject button (my current iMac G5), etc...
Some installers ask you to manually eject the CD (or the floppy... memories of system 7..), others throw it at you or to the side...
As for the "eject.menu", on my current OS 10.4 the path is the one I indicated. I just checked. Under 10.3.9 I think it was also the same. But I will check on my old iMac G4 running 10.3.9, still in the family but not at my place.
So please give me some time to get my hands on it.
Spotlight (or Sherlock), (does Sherlock still work as a search system on Mac OS10.3.9?) doesn’t search through the nooks and crannies of the system. EasyFind does, but we would need to find an old version for 10.3.9. The latest version only works on Tiger: http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/freeware/
As soon as I know more, I will let you know.

Absolutely, Francis, absolutely... it works even if 10.3.9 is only pre-Spotlight.
I then searched and found the xxx.menus... I must not have been paying attention to not follow "manually" the path you had indicated. So a big thank you for your explanations :-)
I am copying and pasting below the corresponding Mac help for OS X 10.3.9 (it might be useful for other forum explorers):
Searching for files and folders in specific locations
If you know which disk or folder contains the items you are looking for, you can specify that location as the search area. For example, if you have a large amount of images, it may be desirable to search only in the Images folder.
1 In the Finder, choose File > Find, then choose "in specific locations" from the "Search in" pop-up menu.
2 Click Add (+) and select the folder where you want to perform the search. Deselect the disks and other folders you want to exclude from the search.
3 Complete the specification of your search, then click Find.
You can also add a folder to explore by dragging it into the search window list. To remove a folder, select it, then click Remove (-).

Imagik was supposed to take a nap earlier and returned an error to me. At 5 PM, he got up and I saw the Spotlight image in all its glory. In fine, Sherlock gives the same result but is less pretty...
