Thunderbird no longer asks for my password. Solved

Question

Good evening everyone, I use Thunderbird 2.0.0.9 as my email client to check my emails (it's great!).  Unfortunately, when I launch it, it tries to connect to the server without asking me for my password... and therefore, the connection fails ^^ It worked perfectly before: upon launching, a dialog box would prompt me to enter my password, and everything would go smoothly... But I haven't changed anything since then.  It had done this to me before, and the problem resolved itself on the next launch... I don't see anything in the options that could influence this (especially since nothing has changed compared to when it was working).  Thank you in advance for your help --  If there is no solution, it means there is no problem (Shadok proverb)

Well, after rebooting the machine, it's asking me for my password again... so it's working now^^
I'm not closing the discussion for now, as no solution has been proposed (no, rebooting is not a solution :p )

Hello

I was passing by, so I wanted to take the opportunity to suggest a solution:
Tab: "tools" - "options" - "privacy" - "saved passwords" - "edit saved passwords"
By clicking on "show passwords," check that there are not 2 different passwords for the same account.
If you want to enter your password every time, the easiest way is to "remove all."

Proposed solution assuming it's indeed related to Thunderbird.
It may also be that you cannot connect to the server (for X reasons), and it’s normal that it does not ask for authentication.

Personally, I have the opposite bug sometimes, and completely reinstalling Thunderbird usually resolves this issue most of the time.

You can also visit the Geckozone forum if you need specific information regarding your email client. But don't forget the tips that could help you, depending on what you're looking for.

Hello

What mail server are you using?
Does your internet connection at home work well?

The password prompt only appears when connecting to the server, so no password request = no connection to the server.

To test the connection to your POP server and ensure it isn't an issue with your mailer, you can do the following:

start -- run -- cmd ok
type: telnet pop.yourserver.fr 110 .... replace pop.yourserver.fr with the one you are using ....

if the connection is successful, you will see: Ok pop3 ..etc ..etc
type user yourlogin enter
if your login is recognized
pass your password enter

it's another way to connect to your mail server ... (and it looks really professional

The problem comes, I think, from the mail server.

At school you are on the local network, the issue is not the same.
Maybe the connection requires a secure access from the outside (ssl or tls)

Make a request to the IT support of supinfo ??

Isn't SUPINFO the School of Computer Science in Paris???

the sending protocol is different from the receiving one... being able to send doesn't mean being able to receive
If you have another address, test it there

so I see 2 options:
your internet connection is down, making it impossible to connect to the mail server (but you should notice that, with impossible web browsing, Windows disconnection alerts,....)
the mail server is unreachable (and there are X reasons to consider related to supinfo, proxies, security...)

Possibly a saturation of your mail space...

I tried a telnet on mail.supinfo.com with port 110 and I got an error (connect error 10060), if that can inform the admins...

I didn’t have time to ask the IT department why it wasn't working, but I found it!

Supinfo is always a hassle!

So, set up your Supinfo account:
- email
- your name, your Supinfo address
- IMAP: mail.supinfo.com
- incoming user: esi\your_campus_booster_id

More specifically:
- server settings:
-- mail.supinfo.com:993, SSL
- copies and folders
-- always set to "Other" and specify the correct folder
-- (otherwise we never point to the correct folder, and it quickly becomes a mess...)

For the outgoing server (smtp):
mail.supinfo.com:25, security=NO

Miracle, it almost works!
And yes, I'm having major issues with deleting messages :-S

If anyone knows how to configure deletion?????
I want it so that when I delete, it goes to "deleted items"
(and not to the magical "Trash")

I don't quite understand your issue...
What is the benefit of redirecting to "deleted items"? (I assume it's a folder you created)

The "trash" folder is integrated into Thunderbird, just like the "inbox".
If you delete them in your Mail directory, inbox and trash are recreated when Thunderbird is reopened.

What difference in behavior or advantage do you want by redirecting the deletion of an email to a different folder than "trash"?

Hello.

Yes, Thundermail has a built-in trash.
Unfortunately, it does not work with the supinfo account,
because this trash points to an IMAP folder named "Trash"
while on the Exchange server, the trash is named "Deleted Items"...
This is also true for the inbox and the sent mail.
If we do not respect this configuration of our mail server,
then it becomes very messy with Outlook or webmail,
because we end up with lots of extra folders...

The solution:
- menu "Tools", item "Options", tab "Advanced", button "Configuration Editor"
- filter: "mail.server"
- identify the supinfo server, for example "server2" for me: mail.server.server2.hostname=mail.supinfo.com
- then add for this server a "New > String" (context menu):
--- option name: mail.server.server2.trash_folder_name
--- new value: &AMk-l&AOk-ments supprim&AOk-s
If you see this folder appear, then try instead:
--- new value: Deleted Items
>>>>> Then your "Trash" becomes "Deleted Items" :-)
(note: I restart Thunderbird for it to take the new trash into account)

There remains the problem of non-deletion.
I summarize what I've learned (very vague quote!!!):
- IMAP does not know "MOVE" but only "COPY" and "DELETE".
>> Thus deletion translates to copying to trash, then deleting.
- Thundermail does not delete, but simply marks as deleted.
- The deletion of marked items corresponds to the action "Compact".
- You can force this compaction with the option: mail.imap.expunge_after_delete
