Hello,
my email won’t open. The message “Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your startup folder is full” appears when I try to open it. However, Mail.Mac works normally. What should I do?

You can still get through this by repairing the hard drive, even without the installation CD.
I hadn't mentioned it before because it's a bit less simple, but still easy.
You will boot in Single-User mode and initiate the fsck procedure.
Proceed as follows:
Start the Mac while holding down the “Command” and “S” keys
The Mac will boot, and the screen will fill with text similar to MS-DOS. (these are Unix lines)
When the Mac has finished booting, and you have “the prompt”
Type fsck –fy Note: respect the case and the spaces
Press Return
Wait for the result; if it is not “the HD seems to be OK”
Type fsck –fy
Press Return
And so on, until the message displayed is “the HD seems to be OK”
Type reboot
Press Return
The Mac will reboot normally
Then, launch your “Disk Utility” application found in your Applications / Utilities folder..
and proceed to repair the disk permissions
Then, you can continue with the rest of the operation I mentioned above.
Good luck

Hello,
I have conducted further research regarding your problem. It appears that you are experiencing corruption of the Envelope Index file located in your library ( ~/Library/Mail/Envelope Index) - Your message is a bug, if you are indeed sure that you have available space on your hard drive.
You need to perform a repair of your hard drive first - not just a repair of permissions. To do this, you need to boot from the Tiger installation DVD or CD.
Proceed as follows:
Note that this is a copy-paste of a procedure I had written for Panther, but it is similar for Tiger.
-Insert the Tiger installation disk
-Reboot the Mac while holding down the “C” key until you reach the startup screen
-When the dialog window opens, do not start the installation
-Go to the menu bar
-Select “Utility Disk”
-In the dialog window that just opened, select the “S.O.S” tab.
-In the left part of the window, select the problematic startup hard drive
-In the lower right part, click the “Repair Disk” button
-If the Utility states it has performed repairs, run the repair again until the message indicates that the disk appears to be OK. (this disk appears to be OK or similar if the message is in English)
-Then after the process, click on “Repair Permissions”
-Restart the Mac normally
Once the hard drive has been repaired and the permissions have also been repaired -
-Quit Mail if it is open!
-Go to your library => Hard_Drive / Users / Your_Name / Library (or Library) /
-In this folder, copy your Mail folder, select it, press Command-C, then on the desktop press Command-V, or more simply drag and drop it onto the desktop while holding down the Option key, so the system makes a backup copy of this folder on your desktop.. just in case.. (this folder contains all your emails)
-Now open the original Mail folder located in your library, find within this folder the “Envelope Index” file and move it to the trash - note that if you see other files with this name, throw them away as well.
-Launch Mail. It will tell you it needs to import your messages. Click “Continue,” and Mail will proceed to rebuild the “Envelope Index” file
-Mail will say it is “importing,” but in fact, it is recreating the index file based on the emails already present in the folder, which should be in Mail 2.xx format, which I believe is your case since you are on Tiger.
Preferably, restart the Mac after this, and if everything is OK, you can of course delete the backup Mail folder on your desktop.
There you go, and good luck
Sincerely

It happened to me as well, you just need to go into the small house folder, then library, mail, and put "envelope index" and "envelope index-journal" in the trash. Then open mail and follow the instructions.
Hello everyone,
I had a scary situation this morning when trying to open Mail on my MacBook Air (OS Lion 10.7.5): it prompts me to "import my existing Mail messages to the new version in order to use the new Mail features"... However, I did not do any specific updates last night!
Then when I click on "Continue," I get the following message:
"Import failed: an error occurred during the import. Please ensure that there is sufficient available space in your home folder, then try again."
As a result, I am stuck and unable to access my email (even after restarting the MacBook Air several times and "cleaning up" with OnyX).
Could you please advise me on what steps to take to resolve this situation as quickly as possible?
Thank you in advance.

Good evening,
This message seems to indicate that the hard drive is full and there is no more space to load messages...
We should delete unnecessary files and empty the trash.
Best regards

Thank you for the response, but there are still 23GB left on the hard drive. I have also removed all the applications that launch at startup, but nothing works.
If someone else has another idea, I’m all ears.

Hello sanspseudo,
Thank you very much for the procedure. I am currently traveling in Rio, and unfortunately, I don't have the installation CD. As soon as I get the CD, I will apply it.
Once again, thank you.
Best regards
