Detaching the battery for a good quarter of an hour will not recharge it... The lithium battery in question is not rechargeable.. its lifespan is highly variable, between 5 and 10 years... Its voltage is around 3 volts, 2.8V is already too low...
Without certainty and without reliable measurement, the prudent thing is to replace this battery with a truly new one...

To be more pragmatic about CMOS 2032 batteries, lifespan and voltages—I have tested many on old PCs to restore; correction, it's ten years minimum and 0.2 volts lower, which does not in any way affect the PC's operation.
For information, even AA batteries work with devices at voltages much lower than those specified; my rechargeable batteries are 1.2V instead of 1.5V by default, they are designed to operate like that as a comparison.

It used to be true on old PCs... with 40-pin C-MOS, and also Ni-MH batteries that were recharged during the operation hours of the motherboard...
Now the chips are much more compact, internal buses are serialized and frequencies are significantly higher... it takes power...
In short..! that doesn't detract from what you say, I don't doubt it... there are so many strange things around MOS, among others... this BIOS didn't necessarily need an update..? risking a version error..??
