Google: inactivity of my account but on Hotmail??

Hello,

I received an email today (in English, no less) from Google at my Hotmail address saying this:

"Urgent: Sign in to your Google Account if you want to keep it

Your Google Account has not been used within a 2-year period.

If you want to keep your Google Account, sign in to your Google Account before August 28, 2025."

There is a "Sign in" link, but it takes me to the Gmail login page, whereas this is my Hotmail address, which I use as a junk address but also for recovery for my main address, which is indeed a Gmail address.

What can I do? What should I understand?
I'm a bit perplexed =) can you help me?

I thought I would ignore this message, but since they are talking about deleting my account (which one of the two? I don't know) I would rather avoid that.

Thank you =)

    Hello,

I confirm - the Gmail account is part of the Google account - it’s always the same account. You received this alert at your Hotmail address because it is associated as a recovery method for your Google account. It is not affected by this deletion.

To cancel the deletion of your Google account, all you need to do is log in through the Gmail site, or any other Google service, then confirm that you want to keep the account.

If Google thinks your account has been inactive for 2 years, it may be because you are only using a messaging app (other than Gmail) and you have not reconnected to Google with this account since that time.

Re hello right after my last message.

While digging a bit, I did something that might correspond to what this email was initially asking for (not sure, but I hope so).

I explain: I went to my Google account to search for answers and on the homepage, I clicked on "Email addresses" (far right under my profile picture).

Once on this page, I noticed that in the "Recovery email address" section, my Hotmail address was there as expected, but it indicated (with an ! in an orange circle) "Address to be confirmed" (or something like that).

So that made me realize that there was potentially something to do. I clicked on that part to confirm that this is still my recovery address. Google sent a verification code to my Hotmail address, and once I entered the code, it was "good."

I received an email on Hotmail and Gmail confirming that the validation of this Hotmail address had been successfully completed.

If this was indeed what Google expected, it was quite poorly explained in the original email, leading me to come here to ask for help.

A simple "please go to your Google account to validate the use of your Hotmail address as a recovery address" would have sufficed instead of "log into Google or we will delete your address"...

I don't know if my problem is truly resolved, but at least it's the only thing I could do that might be related to the initial email.

If you have a better solution, I'm still interested :/

      Thank you for your help.

I had the same alert that I was hesitant to follow up on.

Your explanations really helped me resolve my issue and I have received the email regarding the report of my account.

      Have a nice day.

    Hello

2 years without using it, if that speaks to you, we don't know on your behalf.

What would prevent you from using one or two of your personal addresses at least once for this occasion? And redo this process?

I don't understand how the doubt between these two addresses prevents you from using both of them at least occasionally, simply to keep them.

      Hello,

It's not requested to delete either address but to log into your Google account, otherwise it will be deleted.

If you want to keep it, you log in with your main Gmail address (the recovery address has nothing to do with it) and we talk about something else, but the context is curious: if you're using Gmail, it's because you're connected to your Google account.

      I use both addresses simultaneously.

The Gmail address is my primary address for everything administrative, job searching, etc.

The Hotmail address (an old one like KikouLolDu68@hotmail) is used for Gamepass for example (Microsoft address) as well as sites that are bound to inundate me with ads. For instance, MAO plugin sites, if they offer free plugins you have to sign up and then you get flooded with spam, so I use the Hotmail address which has been full of spam for years anyway.

I checked the sent mails, the last one from Hotmail is from July 2024. That's far but it's still less than two years.

For the Gmail address, I send at least one email per week, especially right now because I’m looking for a job.

For me, "Google Account" and "Gmail" are the same thing, but based on the responses to my question, it doesn't seem to be the case after all.

    Hello

    The question is simple

Hotmail is your recovery and fallback address; Google uses it to contact you to check if you want to continue using its services

So I have to click on "sign in" as they ask and log in with my Gmail address, right?

Their system is poorly explained because they say that my Google account hasn't been used for years. Isn't the "Google account" the same thing as the Gmail address?

Their request is not clear :/

    Hello,

Alright, I see, I have connected to my Google account through my Gmail address since Hotmail obviously can't work. I hope it's okay now ^^

I'm having trouble keeping track of Gmail, Gdrive, Google Account... Everything connects with the Gmail address so for me, everything is a bit linked and active as long as I visit Gmail or my Drive regularly.

I find their system a bit odd :/ "You are constantly logged into Gmail, but we notice you haven't had any activity with another one of our products for 2 years, so we're going to close your account"... WHAT?

    Hello ProZack,

Now that you are logged in, Google should have sent you a new email to your Hotmail address confirming that your account has been successfully recovered.

For activity, Google determines if an account is inactive based on, among other things, the history of logins to the account, and whether you use Google applications with this account. So, if you are not using the official Gmail or Drive app, that might be why they considered your account inactive.

The best thing would be to log into your account from time to time through Google's sites to ensure it remains active.

Otherwise, if you have an Android phone or tablet, you can add your account in the settings and continue to use Google apps, like Gmail, web search, YouTube, etc. And if you have enabled Google activity, it will be recorded on your account, which also helps to keep your account active. However, if you are already using another Google account, this method will only work if you switch to the account in question within the apps (tap your profile picture to change accounts).

    Hello,

No, I haven't received any email following this login to my Google account :/

I'm using Firefox and for Gmail or GDrive, I access through the official Google platforms.

I just checked with your link and Google activity is indeed enabled, and my phone is linked to my Google account. I am also logged into YouTube via Gmail.

I don't understand what Google is accusing me of, and I don't have confirmation that the email I received from them is to be taken into consideration or not.

If I am on Gmail, in the top right there is a circle with my profile picture that says "Google Account" with my first name, last name, and my Gmail address displayed if I hover the mouse over it. I am therefore constantly logged into their services.

Could using Firefox pose a problem? I doubt it, but just in case...

I have no choice but to ignore this email now as I don't understand what they expect from me, but I hope I won't have any unpleasant surprises in the future and lose access to my addresses, which could cause major issues for logging into various sites that are sometimes quite important.

    Hello,

Connecting to your account via Firefox should keep it active. There may be a link with the validation of the Hotmail address, which caused Google to consider your account as inactive, and it also did not send the confirmation email stating that your account has been reactivated.

However, normally, even if a recovery method has not been validated, the Google account should not be marked for deletion as long as there is activity like in our case. So this whole situation is still a bit strange...

I advise you to continue logging in and out of your account regularly to create login histories, as this will ensure that Google does not consider the account abandoned.

Yes, this story is strange ^^ especially since I’m not really knowledgeable about all this, I don’t really grasp the situation.

Thank you for your help, we will see what happens next.

Okay, we'll wait for Google's verdict. But I think it should be fine for the account now; it shouldn't be deleted.
