Inactive keyboards before reboot
SolvedAdT -
Hello everyone!
For an association, I bought 4 refurbished Lenovo Thinkpad T580s, running Win 11.
However, the keyboards do not respond at startup; you have to restart the computer for them to work (the same effect on all 4 computers... the keyboards, before restarting, "work" in the sense that you can enable/disable NumLock, FnLock, and the backlighting. But the keys have no effect at the Windows level: you can't enter the password, for example).
I have done all the updates, and the keyboard drivers are up to date...
If anyone has a clue or an idea...
Thanks in advance!!!

by launching a key with a bone on it to see if it doesn't come from your image?
does it work with an external keyboard?
Hello,
Correct me if I'm wrong: refurbished equipment comes with a warranty, although shorter than new products, but generally for 6 months.
Moreover, isn't it inappropriate to try to repair computers that have just been purchased and are not supposed to be sold in a state of wreck?
If anyone has a lead, an idea...
The only reasonable solution is to return everything to the seller and ask him to fix these products, rather than trying to change the keyboards or any other parts, at the risk of uncovering other defects (hard drive, mouse, etc..).
Hello,
I completely agree, there shouldn't be any need to tinker with anything.
However, I don't quite understand how it works: if access to the alphanumeric keys (if it's a PIN, they can only be numeric) is impossible at session identification and we restart, are we not exactly in the same situation?
Just out of curiosity, and wouldn't it be even more normal, if instead of restarting we wait a while, go for a coffee and come back, what happens then?
Hello
The keyboard on this model is lockable, it is likely that this is the problem here. Try the following:
Hold down the Shift key (on the right) for about 3 to 4 seconds to unlock it.
Hello,
The importance of interventions by a practitioner with practical experience of brands and models. Let's hope this is the solution.
If this is the case, it constitutes professional misconduct to deliver equipment without specifying the conditions (particularly if there are any) for starting it up, at the risk of causing unnecessary and costly handling.
Hello Georges97
And thank you, actually I did some digging on Google, because it seems to be a combination of keys that reactivates the keyboard, otherwise I found this user with the exact same problem: https://answers.microsoft.com/fr-fr/windows/forum/all/clavier-thinkpad-t580-inactif/1b7a992d-7c2a-4bd9-9b3c-1b81ec26e344
And for him the problem was resolved gradually with Microsoft updates...
Hello,
There are indeed unlock combinations for Lenovo devices.
https://canada.lenovo.com/fr/ca/en/glossary/how-to-fix-locked-laptop-keyboard/
The harmful role of certain Windows 11 24H2 updates (since December?) is mentioned more often; some argue that restoring to a previous version or disabling fast startup in the power settings would resolve the issue.
-
Update the keyboard drivers via Device Manager. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run command line and type
devmgmt.msc. Expand Keyboard, right-click on the keyboard and click on the Update Driver icon. Then click on Search automatically for drivers.4 -
If the problem persists, consider replacing the keyboard. Replacement keyboards are available on the market, although their quality may vary compared to original products.5
-
Reset the computer and the BIOS, although this is more difficult if the navigation keys are not working.1
-
Ensure that the issue is not caused by a wireless mouse or a video player that could be interfering with the keyboard's operation.
Hello Regcal,
Thank you for this quick response.
As mentioned, the drivers are already up to date. Furthermore, these are laptops, and the problem is the same on 4 laptops... so replacing keyboards on 4 recently purchased laptops...
Also, it is entirely possible to enter the BIOS once the PC is restarted; as I said, once restarted everything works normally (so there's no need to replace the keyboards, they are functioning).
Any other ideas...?
Hello everyone,
Thank you for your help and numerous replies.
I am adding some details following your questions:
No problem with an external keyboard, it works right away.
Pressing the Shift key (on the right) for a few seconds doesn't change anything.
All 4 computers have the same problem even though they don't come from the same supplier (!!!). They are indeed under warranty, but everything suggests that this is due to a Windows 11 update from December, as mentioned...
I am therefore eagerly waiting for the update that will fix the issue, but I continue to search, in particular I will delve into the links you sent me. If anyone finds a solution, please pass it on to me :)
Have a great day,
AdT
