Unable to extend dual monitor on desktop PC

Hello,

I recently acquired a second monitor for my desktop but I have a problem: it is impossible to extend the display.

I only have one functional HDMI port on my tower, so I bought an HDMI splitter 1 input to 2 outputs, here is the purchase link (https://www.fnac.com/Repartiteur-HDMI-Temium-Noir/a14022858/w-4).

But after finishing the connections, there seems to be a problem: the display works fine on both screens but I cannot extend the display: the same thing shows on both screens and I can't change it (in projection, when I click on "extend" nothing happens).

I have tried several things I found online but nothing works, I also tried several things myself, such as swapping the cables, etc., but nothing does the trick.

When I go to settings > system > display, I do not have the "identify" option, when I click "detect" it says "no other screen detected" (even though I remind you that the display does indeed show on the screen), when I go to "advanced display settings" only one screen is displayed, and when I swap the two ports on my splitter one screen and then the other is detected (I tested, it's the port of the splitter that causes the change and not the cable) but there is no explanation for the fact that it displays but it's impossible to extend the display.

So here I am a bit stuck, I would really like to use the screen but having the same display on both isn't very useful with a desktop computer.

I am open to any solutions for this problem, thank you in advance for your help!

Hello,

An HDMI splitter will always output the same thing on both screens. For a PC, one output equals one screen. For a second screen, another port on the PC is needed.

Recent laptops show docks connected via a USB-C port that have multiple screen ports, HDMI or DisplayPort. The USB-C port on the PC is special; it is of Thunderbolt or DisplayPort type. This could exist on a desktop PC as well; you need to check the documentation for USB-C ports. For example:

USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Type-C) port with Power Delivery/DisplayPort

Yet, it works well when I use a dock with my laptop; I only have one HDMI port, but I can still extend to 2 additional screens. Is there no solution if I don't have another HDMI port?

Hmmm no, I don't have a USB-C port on my desktop computer. And in the case where I have a USB to USB-C adapter, then USB to HDMI splitter, do you think that could work? Thank you very much for the answers already, by the way!

Hello, this is like putting a Ferrari logo on a Renault; it won't turn it into a Ferrari. The same goes for the Type-C DisplayPort; it will remain the original standard of USB Type-A, so it won't work. It's just backward compatibility.

Hello The docking station supports 2 screens, and that changes everything. It can send 2 different images to each of the screens it recognizes. The splitter only distributes one image in 2 directions. The PC does not differentiate between 2 screens. Belkin laptop docking station USB-C dual display dock. Universal USB-C docking station. Support for two 1080p screens.

Stacking converters doesn't change anything.

It's the original USB-C port that matters. Moreover, not all of them have the DisplayPort function; many cannot connect a display and are only usable for data, not for display.

Alright, I'm asking for one last potential solution just in case: if I just use a USB to HDMI converter, and use this port + my existing port, that would work, right?

There are USB-A to HDMI converters that use specific drivers:

Hello, thank you for all the responses! I tried using the USB to HDMI, but it doesn’t work; in fact, I hadn't really thought it through, but the USB ports I have come from my motherboard, while the HDMI port comes from my graphics card; it’s impossible for there to be a video output from my motherboard while I have a graphics card installed. That said, I had another port of the DisplayPort type; I simply bought a DisplayPort to HDMI cable, and this one + my initial HDMI port resolved the issue. Thanks again for your help!

Hello On a tower that we know nothing about, wouldn't the solution be 2 outputs on a graphics card for minimal modification?
