Insert equations with automatic numbering and referencing

Hello,

I am currently writing a long Word document and I have a lot of equations to insert. I would like to insert as a caption next to each equation "(Eq. I-1)" (chapter number-equation number). For now, I have inserted a one-row, two-column table as a model for the equation; one for the equation, one for the caption. Word automatically numbers the equations, but is there a way not to have to manually type "(Eq. )" please?

Also, when I want to refer to this equation in my text, I go to insert > reference but there are no suggestions for equations (it works for figures and tables, but not for equations). Do you have a solution please?

Thank you in advance,

Have a great day,

Camille

    Hello,

Thank you very much for this response! However, I find this technique to be very ineffective; it's almost manual and it doesn't allow for cross-references either...

Thanks again and have a great day,

    Camille

      Hello,

Formally, I don't know, the thorny issue is the references; I don't know if Word can handle that.

I don't know where these equations are coming from, if the MathType integrated into Word does not do it directly, it is possible that a full version or MathML can do it, otherwise any LaTeX editor (there are also graphic versions), but you will also protest that it requires a lot of writing.

    Hello,

It works, you must not be missing much.

When you say: "but is there a way not to have to manually put (Eq.) please?"

By inserting the caption, you activated the option "Exclude caption text" in the dialog box, so there’s only the number without the text.

    So insert the caption in this table template without activating that option. By pressing Alt+F9 you can see the field code: Equation { STYLEREF 1 \s} {SEQ Equation \* ARABIC \s 1}

There, customize the text of this caption accordingly.

    • replace Equation with Eq as you want it that way
    • add an opening and closing parenthesis and you will have (Eq. { STYLEREF 1 \s} {SEQ Equation \* ARABIC \s 1})
    • do Alt+F9 again to display the value which will give you (Eq. I-1)

Then define this table with its caption in auto-insert: select the table -> Alt + F3 and give it a short name (eq for example).

And every time you need to insert an equation, type eq then F3 to recall the auto-insert. The caption will be taken as you defined it in the template without needing to be taken up again.

For the reference, Insert -> Links -> Cross-reference -> category Equation and you should find the list of your captions.

Hello Argitxu! It's nice to see you here again, it's been a long time! ;)

I just wanted to chime in regarding the insertion of a caption, whatever it may be, there’s nothing thorny about it. Indeed, Word offers Figure, Table, and Equation, but in reality, we can put whatever we want (e.g., eq, toto, mimi, Photo, etc.). In the Insert Caption dialog box, you just need to click on New Text and type what you want.

Then, by default, for subsequent captions, Word will use this caption text.

Agitxu, of course, provides a much more automatic and thus faster solution, but fundamentally, it still involves adding new text for the caption.
