Black screen, graphics driver removed

Hello everyone, here's my problem: for some time now my laptop screen has been starting to fail, so I connected it via HDMI to an external monitor. Everything was working fine until one day, while fiddling with the drivers to try some (rather bad) solutions from the internet, I read that uninstalling and reinstalling the graphics driver might help. So I tried this technique, and immediately after uninstalling the driver, I got a completely black screen; nothing is displayed on the external monitor either. I can hear the computer turning on and running, but I can't do anything since the screen is completely black. Several tutorials on YouTube advise me to reinstall my drivers, but I can't do anything since I can't see ANYTHING. I'm at my wit's end; it's been two weeks of this. I've tried every fix I found, and I took it to a professional who told me it's the display and it will cost a lot... Yet I'm sure it just needs a driver reinstalled, especially since I have a second (very, very old) computer that might help with a workaround... Thank you in advance for any solution...

Even for a beginner, it's not complicated; you just need to go gently on the plastic frame of the screen.

Once removed, you have 2 or 4 screws holding the panel, then you lay the panel on the keyboard, unplug the ribbon cable at the screen connector (which should be held in place by tape—don't pull too hard on the ribbon cable as your webcam is also connected to it).

And for reassembly, just do everything in reverse.

If it doesn't fit on a computer, don't force it.
When you don't know, you can't guess.

good evening

what brand and model of laptop?

to try:

start the laptop, wait for it to finish booting and use the fn key and F something (the key varies depending on the laptop) to try to switch to the external screen. (but maybe you've already tried this)

best regards

Hi everyone,
corrado076: well no! he already explained it:
"I had a complete black screen, nothing displays even on the external monitor":
Downloading a driver would not be the problem, but how to install it on this PC, personally I don't see it.
Maybe remove the HDD and connect it to another PC, externally to use its OS?
Regards!

Hello Justemoi07 and txiki,

what surprises me is that when you uninstall a graphics driver, you normally revert to a basic Microsoft card with a resolution of 600x800.

But since it's for Windows, it doesn't prevent the PC from booting; you should still have access to the BIOS.

So for me, the screen is dead, and the PC should switch to the external monitor, but it might not be configured to do so automatically.

As for putting the HDD in another PC, I agree, but you need the same graphics card; otherwise, it might refuse to install the driver, as it won't find compatible hardware.

But it's worth a try; you never know.

Best regards,

Hello,

I agree with Corrado, usually upon rebooting, Windows automatically reinstalls a generic driver.

And you should at least see the boot screen, regardless of whether drivers are installed or not.

Regards.

I must admit that apart from installing the proper driver on a USB stick, I'm lost... I really had this black screen issue when I uninstalled the driver, so maybe the drive failed at the same time... What I don't understand is why the driver doesn't reinstall itself... A lot of people told me it should do so automatically... The most complicated part is that I have no visual feedback during the reboot or in safe mode... I have to do everything blindly and I don't know if I'm in the right place with each restart, because I can hear it powering on (that's the most frustrating part).

Thanks anyway for your responses!

Ok, so if I saw correctly it would be fn+F5

just to see if the external screen turns on.

As for putting the driver on a USB stick, I agree, but without a screen it's not going to be easy.

And on the external screen, doesn't the backlight turn on with a message "no signal"?

The external screen shows me "weak or nonexistent signal"

I tried on several screens and always get the same message, I will try FN+F5 to see!

Thanks a lot

Well, for me, it's your PC that doesn't support dual screen from startup.

Like on my PC (Lenovo ThinkPad X230), which starts first on the laptop screen, and once Windows has booted, it shows the desktop on the external screen.

And normally, Windows 10, once it has booted, should display the image on the external screen automatically as soon as it detects it.

But I've never tested it on a Microsoft basic graphics driver, so I don't know if this generic driver supports dual screens. And if that's the case, apart from changing the laptop screen, I don't see any other solution.

Do you have an indicator for the hard drive activity? It should blink if the disk is "thinking".

Best regards

Yes, the hard drive is working; I can hear it and the light is on.

What bothers me is that changing the drive costs between 100 and 150 euros, and I don't really have the means to repair it right now...

I'm looking to get another one, but I wanted to try everything to save this one before investing in another and losing all my data...

Okay so it's really just a screen problem.

If you feel up to changing the panel yourself:

I took the first one I found, by searching a bit more we might find it cheaper.

Is it really complicated? I'm just starting out in this field and I admit it scares me a little to open the screen. I've already opened the laptop, but the screen is something else!

Thank you anyway for the valuable help!
