Hello,

I don't know if I'm in the right place. I have my personal accounting on MSN Money. I wanted to transfer it to this computer which is running Windows 11. I'm sure I made a wrong manipulation compounded by a significant oversight. Indeed, Money is properly installed on the computer, but I'm being asked for a password and ....... it's impossible to retrieve it. Can you help me?

Thank you in advance

Hello .....

If I understand correctly, you had or still have an old PC on which MsMoney was installed ......

On the old PC, was MsMoney protected by a password? .... If so, it’s surprising that you don't remember it, especially if you have been using MsMoney for a long time .....

You mention an error or a mistake on your part ► Which one?

Talk to you later after you've replied

Hello crismut ...

Thank you for the feedback!

You mentioned earlier that your issue was with the password you might have forgotten ► Is that it, or is there something else that's bothering you?

Do you still have the old PC where MsMoney was installed, and is it still working?

See you!

Hello,

My problem is solely that of a lost password that Money requests once it is installed on this computer. I still have the other computer: it runs on Windows 10.

See you!

OK ...How long have you been using MsMoney? .....If yes, it's strange to not remember your password unless you're doing annual backups ... exaggerating

Do you have access to MsMoney on your old PC?

See you later

One thing I don't quite understand ... You have access to MsMoney on your old PC ... which means you can open it with its password in that case ► Please confirm by return

From which source did you install MsMoney on your new PC?

See you later

On the old PC: When I click on the Money icon, I'm not asked for a password so it opens without any problem.

On the new one: I installed it from the site "commentcamarche.net". However, I'm unable to say if, during the installation on the new PC, a password was requested.

I’m starting to understand then…..

On your old PC, MsMoney doesn’t have a password, so you installed MsMoney on the new PC by adding a password; otherwise, it wouldn’t ask you for one in this case….

Let’s proceed as follows

  • Uninstall MsMoney completely and properly on the new PC as indicated ►Here
  • Restart the PC at the end of the uninstallation
  • Reinstall MsMoney ► Here ► Make sure not to add a password; otherwise, you’ll have to start all over again..
  • Once the installation is finished ► Relaunch MsMoney from the last backup made on the old PC without a password

In principle, everything should be ok

Edit ► On what medium are you making your backups? It could be that the user name is different from one PC to another, and MsMoney may not recognize the backup from the old PC....... The ideal way to bypass this problem is to make a backup on a USB key for the transfer the first time...

If there are any issues along the way ► Come back here

See you later for the results

The backups of Money are made on a USB key anyway.

I managed to uninstall Money. However, I'm stuck on the hidden files. I didn't understand much of what was written. As for the Regedit command ...................

This may seem long, but I've made sure you understand well if you're not too familiar with Windows... but in reality, it's simple to do.

To open hidden files in Windows 11, you need to follow the steps below.

Open the Windows Explorer.

At the top right, you have 3 dots ... ► Click on it ► A window opens ► Click on Options (at the bottom).

Then another window opens ► Click on the View tab ► Scroll down the list to find the line Show hidden files, folders... ► Check this line (see screenshot) ► confirm by Apply (and the hidden files will be visible) ► When you're done with the hidden files, you can hide them again by checking the box below the line you checked and apply... and that's it.

Now that your hidden files are visible, to delete the "remnants" of the MsMoney installation, do as indicated below.

Open the Windows 11 Explorer ► Click on the C:\ drive ► A window opens ► Click on the line User ► A window opens ► Click on the line of your username (the name you gave your PC) ► Another window opens ► Click on the line AppData ► A window opens ► Click on the line Microsoft ► Another window opens ► Look for the line Money that you delete.

That's it for the hidden files of MsMoney (as mentioned above, you can hide the hidden files after this or when you are completely finished...)

Now regarding the Registry, you need to be very careful because it's a sensitive area and you should proceed with caution and do exactly what is indicated below.

Open the registry by typing Regedit in the search area on the left.

A window opens ► Click on regedit.exe (at the top and the registry opens).

Open the key Hkey_Current_User, then look for the line Software and click on it ► Then look for the line Microsoft and click on it ► Then look for the line Money that you delete and that one only.

If you have any problems or questions, come back here.

Once the operation to remove MsMoney remnants in hidden files or the registry that Revo Uninstaller does not delete is done... the clean and complete uninstallation of MsMoney is complete ► Restart the PC and do a new installation of MsMoney, making sure not to allocate a password this time, otherwise it will all have to be done again...

See you later
