I occasionally have the same problem with mine (also an Acer).
For me, when it happens, (my Chromebook is fanless so it makes no noise under normal circumstances) when I put my ear to the casing, I hear a slight rustling like electronic noise, proof that there is a malfunction either with the battery or with the ACPI. Furthermore, the charger and the bottom of the device heat up. The first time this happened, I took drastic measures: I opened it (12 screws to remove from the back) and disconnected the battery connector before turning it on with the charger only. I then reconnected the battery and the operation returned to normal. Subsequently, I noticed that all I had to do was let the battery discharge almost completely before connecting the charger to get things back in order.
If your Chromebook is still under warranty, contact customer service because this isn't normal.
Yes, the battery is completely dead and it's an Acer Chromebook Spin.
