Black Bars on Samsung 4K TV

Hello everyone

I just bought a Samsung 4K Neo QLED TV.
For movie playback, I have black bars at the top and bottom. No adjustment can correctly remove them, except a Zoom option that distorts everything. Some movies don’t have them.
It seems that given the different movie formats and the TV format (16:9), this is normal.
The screen resolution (3840*2160) and that emitted by my decoder are identical (UHD Orange).
Note that on my old Samsung (UHD resolution 1920*1080), I had a fullscreen option without noticeable distortion.
Can you tell me if this is normal or not?
Best regards

Hello,

In my opinion, it's normal.

There are many standards when it comes to TV images... Dimensions, type, encoding, ratio, frequencies... etc...

Both regarding the source image of your media and the capabilities allowed by your television... Check the manual...

You will only be able to see well the formats accepted by your TV... The others will have distortions... and some will not be visible at all.

I recommend lowering the screen resolution and using common values like 1920x1080 to be able to view your video library.

There you go.

Hello, just a reminder to clearly differentiate between the definition and the "ratio." The standard ratio for televisions is 16:9 or 1.77; this is the division of pixels on a horizontal line by those on the vertical line. 1920 divided by 1080 equals 1.77.

3840 divided by 2160 = 1.77. If you have streams that are not standard, you will have black bars on the sides like old 4:3 films or adventure films with black bars on the top and bottom for a "panoramic" or "letterbox" effect. As you may have noticed, trying to modify the ratio with your TV settings will only distort the image; leave it in normal viewing mode.

Hello Jeannets, Hello Glandu

Unfortunately, you confirm my fears

On my old Samsung UHD (1920*1080) I didn't have these problems and the images seemed correct to me.

Jeannets suggests changing the screen resolution (TV I suppose) but on the new one it seems impossible to change the resolution, should it be changed on the decoder?

Thank you for your responses

Best regards

Hello Jeannets

I just changed the definition on the decoder, there’s no change, still the black bars

Another question

There are certain movies that appear in full screen and others with bars

So it depends on the format of the movie.

Do you know a way (website or other) to know the native format of the movie.

When you search for a movie's name on the internet, you get a lot but not the format.

Another thing, every time I reply I have to re-check the boxes "Receive replies by notifications / email".

I'm new to the forum, so I must be making a mistake

See you!

Hello my dear Jeannet and our new member "Rain", I'm at the controls so I will give my opinion. Science has rules that also apply to television, so I was able to obtain the definitions of certain films none of which had the ratio 1.77.

Type for example "Once Upon a Time in the West", you will have a bar at the top and bottom.

"Cinema Paradiso" ratio 1.66.

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinema_Paradiso#Fiche_technique

Some modify the image like "zoom" or "wide screen"; there will always be some deformation of the image, more or less acceptable, and those whose tapes are affected get by with it.

To your question, you receive the answers by notification; it's to receive a message in your inbox that you have a response from "how does it work". It seems to me that you are free not to check the box.

Give it a try.

Hello @glandu and @Pluie77_5299 StatutMembre

here is a software that provides information about a video file from your video library https://mediaarea.net/fr/MediaInfo ==> view ==> text

I confirm, the checkbox is to receive a notification by email

Hello Jeannets

In fact, by typing the name of a film, you often find the native format on Wikipedia.

That's what I'm looking for to understand which films will or won't have black bars.

Thank you Jeannets, thank you Glandu for your help.

I'll mark the thread as resolved (if I find where it is)

See you+

Couldn't find how to mark the thread as resolved.

I'm new to the site and I want to learn, but I don't find it very user-friendly.

See you!

It's on the 3 little dots at the bottom right of your first post "Mark as resolved"

Hi,

I found the solution online by searching for "How to mark as resolved on CCM."

And I still had to read it twice to understand that it was the three dots in the first message.

Without this help, it's impossible to find.

See you,
