Reset .odt files to open with Libre Office

Hello,
My PC crashed. I bought another one running Windows 10. I wanted to get W10Pro back like before, but I couldn't find it, I'll reinstall it later. However, I'm facing a lot of problems and can't seem to get by.
1) Under "Documents," the .odt files I reimported from a backup USB drive won't open with Libre Office, which I re-downloaded on my PC. It's Windows Office that opens them with a big prompt to download their office suite, and since I don't want that for now, my file closes immediately. I can't use it.

So my question is: how do I set Libre Office as the default program for opening all my .odt files?
Can I simply uninstall Windows Office under "Apps and features" without any repercussions?

I'm having doubts because I notice that Windows imposes itself and blocks everything when trying to install something else. I also had to create a new Microsoft account (since this is a different PC) with a security key, without knowing what it was about. Afterwards, I saw that I had to use this key every time to access Windows. I didn't want this lockout either. How can I remove it?

Thank you for your help.

Configuration: Windows / Chrome 101.0.4951.54

Hello ...

To open documents with Libre Office instead of Microsoft Office, just point your mouse at a ******.odt document ► Open With ► Libre Office (Writer for a Word document) and check the box Always open with ...
Your PC was delivered with a free Microsoft Office suite for the moment, but it will be paid after a while if you want to keep it ... and if not, you can uninstall it without any problem

As for what you "call" a security key, I suppose it is the password to open W10? ► To confirm

Thank you jmarion3 for your quick response.
I know the "open with" function, but it only works with one file at a time, and I have thousands under "Documents," and the "always open with" line doesn’t show up either, strangely. There must be another way to set default programs.

The confusion with Windows is that they sometimes use different terms from one explanation to another and we can’t really tell the difference between password, code, account, security key, etc. It freaks me out this confusion.
So basically, yes, it is a password, code, security key to open Windows.

Hello .....

The simplest way, if you do not want to keep the Microsoft Office suite installed by default on the machine, is to uninstall this suite and Libre Office will be your default application for all your documents ...
See ► This link

Does Windows ask you for the password you provided every time you open it, or something else?

Hello,

thanks for helping me.
By the way, I just found by simply typing "assign default programs" in the Windows search. A page opens where you can select a default program for all file extensions... and there are plenty, it's all there. I'm still going to uninstall what I don't need from Windows, like Windows Office, Windows Media Player, and Edge. I'm on Chrome and Edge keeps bothering me relentlessly.

Now, I'm facing a new problem, still within the scope of this reinstallation of my folders and files. Some of my .jpeg image files won't copy to my PC from the backup drive. They all have the same .jpeg extension and are in the same "Images" folder. I discover they have turned into read-only mode. I changed that, but some won't let me correct it and remain read-only. How can I fix this?
Do you have any idea?

Hello .....

As mentioned earlier, if you properly uninstall Microsoft Office that comes with W10, your documents will open with Libre Office since it's the only office suite installed...!

1 ► Regarding the uninstallation of Windows Media Player, you only need to disable it if you don't want to use it, and you can do this via the control panel ► Programs and Features ► On the right, click on the line Turn Windows features on or off ► Just uncheck the Media line, confirm with OK, the PC will restart, and WMP will be disabled but not uninstalled... and you can reactivate it someday if you wish....

2 ► As for Edge, you shouldn’t uninstall it ► Just set your Chrome browser as the default browser and Edge won’t bother you anymore... but you need to keep it!

A+ ► We will look into copying files after you have done what is noted above to avoid mixing everything up.

Thank you for your good advice. There’s no problem for me when it comes to uninstalling everything, including removing leftover keys from the registry. You know, I used to do some malware removal a long time ago, but you forget quickly and everything changes in computing; we’re constantly faced with unusual new situations.

Indeed, I also thought it was better to keep Edge in a corner of the PC in case something goes wrong with Chrome, which isn’t so rare these days.

Currently, Edge is disabled and WMP, quite limited, is not useful to me at all. I do a lot of sound and image processing, and since I never work with wma or wmv formats, I uninstalled it.

Then there’s this issue of files turning read-only for reasons I don’t understand. I’ve been able to modify some but not all in the same folder of secure origin. I believe there’s a story about setting administrator permissions to avoid this, but I can’t quite remember the steps to take.
Do you know it?

Hello....

For your read-only folders ► See below

Right click on the folder ► Properties ► Security tab.
In the window that opens .....
Top toolbar:
Click the Modify button (in the middle of the window).
A new window will open
Click on Users (PC-Your Name\Users).
Make sure the five boxes under the Allow column are checked.
Click Apply, then OK.
Close any open windows.
The folder(s) should now be able to receive all modifications...

See you later for your upcoming comments or ► Topic resolved
