open .xls files with open office

I cannot open an Xls file with the latest version of Open Office. Why?

And with MS Office, can you? If you don't have it, download the Excel viewer.
I have MS Office and Open Office and no problem.
I right-click and open with scalc and there you go! It's all good...

If you can't open it with MS either, then the problem probably lies with your file.

If it's an xlsx file (MS-Office 2007), that's normal.

I'm having the same problem without knowing how to solve it. I have Office 2007 and I can't open my documents with Open Office. It offers me a lot of filters but I don't know which one to choose.
