Switching users after buying a second-hand phone

Hello,

I bought a HP laptop for my wife that dates back to 2019 and it works very well.
My problems are:

1 - I would like to remove the Microsoft user account of the previous owner and replace it with my wife's account. I assume the previous owner's account is in Administrator mode?

2 - I want to stop having to enter the user password at Windows startup, I would like to go directly to the desktop after Windows boots up.

3 - Does the fact that I cannot install version 20H2 with Windows Update (apparently many people have this issue) prevent me from doing what I asked in questions 1 and 2?

Thank you in advance and sorry for asking so much...

mag

Configuration: Windows / Chrome 98.0.4758.82

Hello,

To remove the old administrator account, go to settings, family and other users, create another user. I'm not sure how to proceed to remove the admin in Windows 10.
To remove the password at startup, do the following:
run
type in the window that opens: "control userpasswords2", uncheck the option to require a password on startup
The fact that the PC does not want to update to version 20H2 does not change anything regarding your requests!

Hello Quentin,

You'll allow me to make a small correction (but one that could be crucial).

To delete the old administrator account, go to settings, family and other users, create another user

another user, yes, but above all, it should also be an administrator (in the name of the new administrator), without any rights, especially those allowing the installation of applications or making any changes to the system settings.

However, to access this setting that allows the creation of a second administrator (before deleting the old one) or to change its name, you still need to know that famous password (the one that magmavender wants to delete, which he can only do by using this password, which is normal to access a protected session).

There is a procedure (other than formatting) to recreate an administrator session when you are just a standard user, but I don't know it and no longer have the link.

I think another participant will be able to provide it; otherwise, you need to explore the site malekal.com, where it seems to be found.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.
It's true that a question that should be straightforward turns into a headache times 10 thanks to Microsoft...
Maybe I should check YouTube to see if anyone had the good idea to make a tutorial on the topic.
If I find one, I'll share it ;-)

I am not in charge of Microsoft’s defense, but any password-based system, whether at their place or with any other software vendor (Linux, Android, Macintosh), relies on the knowledge of the username/password pair, without which security would not exist.

The principle is that the user of new hardware decides whether or not to activate this protection, but for second-hand hardware, just like with a padlock, the previous owner must provide you with the code. This is indeed a universal banality.

You can indeed find all sorts of tutorials on YouTube, most of which will probably tell you that you need to install an authorized Windows session (sold on retail websites), knowing that bypassing passwords is not documented on CCM. I am of course disregarding tutorials that pay little attention to legislation.

I have the passwords of the previous owner. I understand the ID/password issue, no problem.

I just want to find a simple tutorial to explain the steps to follow.

If you consult the Microsoft site to solve problems (answers.microsoft), it seems like engineers with 15 years of higher education are responding as if you were an engineer yourself.
The smartest scientist in the world can be the worst teacher ever.

I know this because right now I'm struggling to install the 20H2 update and when you consult the Microsoft site you end up even more lost than before asking the question. Yet this is a problem that affects many people.

Hello,

It's something else then. I'll try to explain how to do it:

1- left-click on the Windows button in the taskbar
2- left-click on the settings icon (gear)
3- left-click on the "accounts" section
4- left-click on the "family and other users" section in the left column
5- left-click on the "add another user" section
6- left-click on the "I don't have this person's sign-in information" section
7- add a user without a Microsoft account
8- enter the user's name
9- do not set a password

The new account will appear in the window, below the old one.

-by clicking on this account, choose "change account type to set it as administrator" (mandatory to have all rights, as mentioned earlier).

Please note that the session that will appear at launch and which you can activate by clicking on the "person" icon of the Windows button is a blank session, without the programs and folders from your initial session.

Restart the machine to test access to this new session, while the functioning of the old one remains unchanged.

If you want to keep both the applications and all your documents, you just need to change the username of the first session, either in step 4 without creating a new session, or by deleting the new session created (in your wife's name) but without deleting the initial session, of course, as it contains all her documents.

As for the installation of a new version of Windows, I wouldn't risk advising you because I'm still waiting for it to happen at the pace decided by Microsoft, which proceeds with automatic updates that suit me, but you will find an answer here:

https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-37470412-impossibilite-de-mettre-a-jour-windows-10-20h2

PS: the latest version is probably 21H2.

So cool, thanks for your help :)
I'll try your method tomorrow because my wife just got home from work and is using the computer.
I'll let you know how it went and if I understood everything correctly :D
Regarding the Windows update, I had just found a tutorial identical to the one you indicated, but once again, it's a failure. Maybe a Windows license issue...
