Hello,
I got hold of a late 2009 iMac to see if it was possible to upgrade it. I managed to install Mac OS Sierra on it. However, no applications can be installed because they all require a newer OS. Is there a way to update it further so that it is at least functional? I can also change parts if necessary.
I am very comfortable with Windows, but this is my first time with Mac!
Thanks in advance!
Configuration: Macintosh / Safari 12.1.2

An iMac 21.5" from late 2009 won't go beyond High Sierra (OS X 10.13.6). You can download the installation package for this version from this page.
That said, don't expect miracles; it's an old version and you may encounter difficulties finding compatible versions of software. What applications do you want to install that are only compatible with a newer version?

Hello,
In addition to Aliboron Martin's response, here’s a link to a site offering old versions for a particular MacOS system: http://www.oldversion.fr/mac/
Personally, my late 2007 iMac is still serving me every day, even for video editing using either the Apple iMovie application or GoPro applications (but I no longer use the latter).
