Import from iPhoto is not finishing!

OK - It therefore seems perfect.

Either the Mac requires some minor software repairs, or there is a file in the list of photos to import that is blocking. A file that is not a photo, or a corrupted photo file.

I personally encountered this issue because in my list of photos, I had a large PDF document.

I recommend first checking the content of the folder containing these photos, displaying them in a list sorted by file type. You should then easily spot any potential intruder.

Next, from the Finder, hold down the alt key, and while keeping that key pressed, go to the Go / Library... menu.

When you are in your Library, go to the Preferences folder, and there, locate the following files:

com.apple.iPhoto.LSSharedFileList.plist
com.apple.iPhoto.plist

and delete them. They will be rebuilt from scratch the next time iPhoto is launched. This will not affect your existing photo library.

If the solution is still not working, restart the Mac while holding down the cmd and R keys until the screen shows an OS X utilities window.

In this window, you will have several options, one of which is to launch Disk Utility. So you launch Disk Utility and from there perform a disk repair. Once that's done, run a Permissions repair.

Exit Disk Utility and restart the Mac normally.

EDIT: If the number of photos is significant, and it still hangs during import due to a corrupted file identified as a photo, a very good way to isolate the culprit is to import photos in small groups. It’s a method I had to use as well after several import failures.

Always specify the exact model of your computer and the exact version of its OS!
