Hello,
for the past two days my Family and Student 2010 Office has not been working (for example, the Word page opens and closes with an error message "problem with the license and the application must close." One-click startup does not work... I tried to repair it but I’m told I need to reinstall...
I know that Microsoft no longer supports 2010... And my activation key would be unusable if I uninstall...
So I have three questions:
1: if I uninstall 2010, will I lose all my files (Word, PowerPoint, etc.)?
2: which office should I take, 2016 or 365? If so, how can I install it with an activation key I purchased?
3: can I install a new Office pack and keep the faulty 2010 version?

Good evening,
In doubt, you should make a backup on an external drive...

After a little follow-up to say thank you, it’s always nice...

In the case that concerns us, the data will normally be kept, but Murphy's law indeed states that Windows can crash at that moment, so yes, it's an excuse to organize a backup, at least on an independent partition, better on an external drive.
The other issue that upsets Scarpetta is an organization problem: one should not let Windows save one day in My Documents, the next day in My Pictures, Downloads...
The idea of a dedicated partition where all the data is systematically placed (or at least a single folder) will reduce the backup to its simplest form by copying the entire contents of that folder.

I gave you my religion, I don't like 365.
Since 2019 is not compatible with Windows 7, 2016 only costs a few euros and is therefore much cheaper, provided you go through a site that offers a refund on purchases if you're not satisfied in case the license doesn't work (and you obviously need to choose one that corresponds to the ISO you've downloaded).

Otherwise...

WindowsFacile has already shared this good tip to get the Office 2010 pack for free on Windows 7.
Which leads here:
This tutorial works with Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. If you have Windows 10, it’s happening here. Although this free Office pack is in 32-bit version, this software is compatible with all versions of Windows, both 32 and 64 bits.

To upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, it's similar to performing a repair without data loss
To perform a repair without data loss, use the tool to create a minimum 8GB USB drive to update, repair, or reinstall Windows:
Windows 11 if compatible, you can check with WhyNotWin11
https://github.com/rcmaehl/WhyNotWin11/releases
Windows 10 https://www.microsoft.com/fr-fr/software-download/windows10/
Windows 11 https://www.microsoft.com/fr-fr/software-download/windows11
If you already have the Windows ISO file, which you can also download with the tool, you can create your USB drive with Rufus
If the PC is old, you need to create the drive in MBR mode
If it's recent (Windows 8 or higher) in GPT mode > For Windows 11 GPT
Uninstall any installed antivirus or firewall and restart
Click on setup.exe in the USB drive.
There is a way without a USB drive but if it crashes, you won't have a lifeline.
PS:
For a PC that came with Windows 7, forget GPT and Windows 11; the drive must be in MBR
(In case you want to boot from it someday to repair or reinstall Windows)

The question 1 has already been answered.
As for question 2, tastes and colors...: Microsoft emphasizes that the 365 subscription ensures that the version is always up to date (although by definition, Windows 7 will not be); personally, I don't like subscriptions, the currently low cost of a 2016 or 2019 license should be taken into account.
Microsoft recommends downloading them via your Microsoft account, I hate the idea (although to use 365, we won’t have a choice), you can download the ISOs, for example, here (and you will need a key to install)

It's question 3 that complicates things.
I don’t know if your version had a limited lifespan, but assuming otherwise and again considering the price of licenses online, I don’t see much point in keeping 2010.
I myself have an archived copy of a 2007 CD on a disk but, to be honest, I’m not quite sure why.
The important thing, and which has been mentioned several times recently here, is that the control panel uninstalls Office very poorly.
It is advisable to use the Microsoft assistant: https://support.microsoft.com/fr-fr/office/d%C3%A9sinstaller-office-d-un-pc-9dd49b83-264a-477a-8fcc-2fdf5dbf61d8
but I’m not sure it can target 2010; in any case, you will have to fish around in your PC and possibly in the registry to delete the shared folders before the new installation.
