unable to view my smartphone photos on my PC before transfer

Hello everyone. I have a problem viewing photos before transferring them to my PC via the original USB cable with my Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S. Let me explain: 1) I take my photos with the built-in camera app on the smartphone. 2) Then I want to view the photos that I want to put on my PC, 3) For that, I connect my smartphone to my PC using the original USB cable (as I did with my old Xiaomi). 4) On my smartphone, I click on transfer 5) On my PC, I open "This PC", then Redmi 9S, then SD card, then DCIM, and there, my photos do not appear as thumbnails like with the old Xiaomi, but as icons (this is before the transfer). I don't see the photo until I double-click on the icon of that photo. Then, the photo is displayed in large; I can then view all the other photos in large by clicking on the right or left scroll arrow, and at the bottom of the photo, there is a ribbon with all the photo icons, with the exclamation mark (!) symbol. I have asked this question on forums for 3 months, as well as to Xiaomi, and no one has found a solution... It is not a PC problem since this action is done before the transfer. However, if I download another camera app on my smartphone, the problem does not occur. The photos are displayed as thumbnails, but with very poor quality. I will try to include photos. Thank you both, I think I’m not explaining myself correctly. I must tell you that all this is not easy for me, it's not from my era, but I'm trying to understand nonetheless. When I plug in my smartphone via USB, I click on File Transfer, the middle line  then I click on (This PC) then (Redmi Note 9S) then (SD card) then (DCIM). Up to this point, there’s no problem. Here’s what I see on the PC before any intervention.  no photos are displayed, only icons... So I do as you advised, I click on view at the top... here’s what I see. Hello,  This setting is not related to the smartphone but to the folder display mode in Windows (very large icons, large, small, tile...)

Hello,  I’m going to go through what you’re doing in order.  For points 1, 2, 3: no problem.  Point 4: it is not necessary to click on Transfer (where did you get that command?). As long as the smartphone is plugged in and turned on, you should normally have access to its content without needing to transfer it to the computer.  Point 5: change the display mode in the file explorer on the PC.   If you are using the Photos app, give it time to display the thumbnails. (It crashes easily).  I don’t know what the ribbon with the photo icons is. I’ve never seen that.  -- What is well conceived is clearly stated, And the words to say it come easily. (Boileau)

Thank you very much, Brucine, for your response. I did as you suggested and saved it as JPG, but nothing has changed. However, I'm glad that you finally understood my problem, because I've been trying to find a solution on forums for over 3 months, and I think people were taking me for crazy... because everyone insists that if I change the display, I would be able to see my photos... Well, I guess I'm going to have to stick with my problem until I buy my next smartphone, but that won't be anytime soon as this one is only 6 months old... If I install another camera app from the Play Store, the photos aren't as nice as with the built-in camera on the smartphone... In any case, thank you so much, because even if you don't have a solution, at least you understood my problem, which is one...

Just to clarify: in the tutorial, it says Windows key + R. The Windows key is the key with the Windows logo to the left of the space bar. Sorry, Brucine, I tried both methods indicated in the tutorial, I attempted to open it with more than 10 default applications, but all that changes is the icon design... not the photo... Thank you for your patience, but I think it's a lost cause...
