Black screen after installing a new SSD

Hello,

I just received a new 500 GB M.2 NVMe SSD and tried to install it. But when I start the PC, I only get a black screen, not even the motherboard manufacturer's screen to enter the BIOS. Nothing.

When I unplug the SSD and turn the PC back on, everything works normally.

What I've noted:
- Putting my Windows boot drive at the beginning of my boot order doesn't change anything.
- The VGA LED lights up to indicate that the graphics card is inaccessible (most likely because the PC can't even get to the display stage for the BIOS opening screen).
- The combination of M.2 and SATA on my motherboard seems to comply with the instructions in the motherboard manual.

Here is my PC configuration:
- Intel Core i5 9600k
- MSI MPG z390 edge ac
- 2 x 8 GB DDR4 3000 MHz
- Gigabyte Geforce RTX 3070 Gaming OC 8G
- Seasonic FOCUS GX-650 80 Plus Gold
- Seagate BarraCuda 2 TB
- Western Digital WD Blue 1 TB
- Western Digital SSD WD Blue 250 GB (boot drive)

And the SSD I'm trying to install:
- Western Digital SSD WD Black SN750 SE 500 GB

I hope you can help me solve my problem...

Martin

Normally, there shouldn't be any issues with your configuration. What can happen is that, when an M.2 SSD is present in certain ports, some SATA ports may be disabled. This shouldn't prevent the display. What’s surprising is that the VGA LED on the EzdebugLED remains lit in the presence of the WD Black SN750 SE 500 GB SSD. This might be a conflict between your GPU and the WD Black SN750 SE 500 GB SSD. You might want to try a BIOS update among the many available.

Thank you for the response. I have checked the different combinations that the motherboard manufacturer provides to organize hard drive connections. And the combination I’m trying to implement is indeed compliant (with one M.2 slot used out of the two available, I can use all available SATA slots). As for the LED, it lights up even when my SSD is not connected and turns off as soon as the manufacturer’s screen appears. My new SSD therefore seems to be causing the system to hang between startup and the manufacturer’s screen. I will try to update the BIOS.

Hello
Clone your 250 GB SSD using "Macrium Reflect" for example, then remove it, put in the 500 GB one, restore your system image from the clone stored on an external hard drive that you connect at the startup of the PC! You will also need to create a bootable USB drive to launch Macrium, this on the first boot to initialize the cloning software!

Thank you for the response. I did think about cloning, but that's not my goal of moving my Windows from disk (at least not for now). And won't the problem come back when I try to reconnect my 250 GB SSD?

Test using an external enclosure for M.2 SSD, your 500 GB SSD, with "CrystalDiskInfo", you never know, a manufacturing defect!

The problem was with my BIOS, which was not updated. Now, everything is working. Thank you for the advice.

I updated my BIOS and everything works fine. The old version dated back to early 2019, I installed the latest version that dates from October 2020. Thank you for solving my problem and have a nice day.
