Random hotspot sharing

Hello,

It is with a bit of desperation that I am writing to you.

I am located in Djibouti, a country with almost non-existent wifi where everyone connects using their phone's "tethering."

I have an iPhone with a local SIM and plan, and a Mac. Generally, everything works on my iPhone, especially the internet.

When I connect to the internet on my Mac via tethering, it's very unpredictable.

That is to say, the connection is indicated as established, but then the internet doesn't show up on the Mac (even though it works on the iPhone).

I have the feeling, possibly incorrect of course, that the issue comes from the Mac, which is generally older and that I am less familiar with than the iPhone. On the iPhone, I have reset the network settings (I believe I did the same on my Mac following the Wikihow tutorial...).

However, I am open to solutions from both sides.

I would like to point out that my Mac connects to other phones' networks but 1. They are not iPhones 2. I have only done this occasionally (and often when it crashes, it tends to be later in the day after several connections/disconnections) 3. When I put my local SIM card in another iPhone, it doesn't work better on my Mac.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide, Raphaëlle

Configuration: iPhone / Safari 14.0.3

Good evening,

I am located in Djibouti,

Here, your message is coming from mainland France though...

As for the rest, it may be that your phone subscription is restrictive regarding tethering. Some mobile operators limit its use. It depends on the terms of the subscription plan.

PS: Assuming, of course, that cellular data is allowed without restrictions on the iPhone.

Good evening! And thank you for your quick response :)

I was unable to post my message from my iPhone, so I had to send it to a helpful friend in France to post it for me (by the way, I hope I manage to post this reply).

As for the data restriction, I doubt it. My roommates consume much more than I do on the hotspot and we have the same plan. Besides, sometimes it doesn't work for an hour and then it works... Everyone in Djibouti (well, those who can afford it, let's be realistic) works like that, and there are many who have iPhones. I think if there were a restriction, it would be well known :/

I would say that if putting your SIM card in another iPhone doesn't work better, it's probably a question of carrier or phone plan... And to test further, you should put a SIM card from another phone in your iPhone and test it... maybe also on the Mac, take a look in the details of System Preferences / Network
