Connection sharing issue Mac

Hello,

I share my internet connection via Wi-Fi, but I can't use the internet. My MacBook Pro OS X 10.8.3 is connected via Ethernet cable and I’m sharing the connection through the built-in sharing, not via AirPort. It works well; I'm able to connect with my phone, Xbox, and use the internet, but when sharing is active, my MacBook itself doesn't access the connection. Is there a sharing condition that requires this, or do I need to configure something to make it work? I know that sharing via AirPort is possible, but I don't know how to do it or if I could share the connection with multiple devices at once. For now, the type of sharing I’m using is not providing internet access for my MacBook.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello,

It is obvious that sharing your internet connection should not deprive the Mac itself of internet access. If your internet quality is poor, with low speed or unstable connection, we could imagine some possible disruptions, but sharing internet should not prevent the owner of the shared network from accessing the internet. Therefore, there must be some incorrect settings.

That said, I don’t understand why you would share your internet connection in this way. If you have a high-speed internet box that can also act as a router, in short, a modern box, you just need to give access to your Wi-Fi network from that box to other devices or users. These other devices will connect to the internet via Wi-Fi without you having to enable internet sharing on the Mac. The Mac can calmly keep its connection in Ethernet mode without needing to activate its own Wi-Fi (Airport).

No no, you misunderstood. I wasn't talking about a box but about a gaming console, Xbox 360. My house gets internet through a livebox, but it's way too far for me to pick up the Wi-Fi signal or use it as a router. Every room is equipped with Ethernet ports, which is why I use my MacBook to share the Wi-Fi connection to all the other devices. I'm willing to think there's a misconfiguration somewhere, but I've looked and I don't know where, and my wired speed is very good, so no issues on that front.

The question that arises then is whether this Xbox acts as a router.
In order for multiple devices to connect to the internet simultaneously through a single box, a single modem, or another device like an Xbox, that device must be capable of serving multiple users at the same time, meaning it must function as a router.
(For example, Free's boxes, like other boxes, require that we enable router mode)

If the Xbox does not act as a router, you will need to insert a router between your Mac and your Ethernet outlet. And it is that router that will serve your different users, including the Mac, either in Wi-Fi or wired mode. And internet sharing will no longer need to be activated.

I don't know much about the Xbox, but it's a path worth exploring.
