Good evening,
While attempting a factory reset of my 2015 Macbook Air (running El Capitan), I made a mistake. I tried to erase the contents of my drives and reinstall OSX, but my screen was unresponsive, so I restarted the computer thinking it would resolve the situation.
The process failed and I can no longer install OSX. I have tried three different methods multiple times:
- The installation with Cmd + R stops after a few hours and displays the message "No package could be installed. Contact the software publisher for assistance. Exit the installer to restart your computer and then try again."
- The installation via the internet with Cmd + Option + R, with the spinning globe, ends with error - 5101F.
- The installation with the bootable USB drive interrupts after a few seconds with the message: "The operation could not be completed. (com.apple.osinstall.error -3). Exit the installer to restart your computer."
I am stuck and a bit desperate as I have no more leads. If anyone has an idea, it would help me immensely.
Thank you in advance.

Hello,
First of all, thank you for your response.
The users in the links you sent are getting the same error messages as me, so this is a great lead!
I started the installation: the screen is indicating "downloading additional components...". In previous attempts, the download would stop after a few hours, so I will wait and see if it works this time.
Thanks again and have a great day! -
Hello,
For existing keys, we can change the date, as certificates have not been valid since October 2019, see here:
https://www.journaldulapin.com/2018/08/10/el-capitan-date-verification/
In the installation interface, you need to launch the Terminal (Utilities -> Terminal) and type the following command.
date 1020200019
The exact syntax is date MMDDHHmmYY but I have already indicated a valid date (MM for month, DD for day, HH for hour, mm for minutes and YY for year). The value sets the date to October 20, enough to install the OS.
Once this is done, macOS should update the time when connecting to the Internet.
Or see these messages:

When everything has failed, read the manual ;) -
There has been progress: After 4:30, the download of the additional components worked, I got access to an interface (which I hadn't had until then) that asked me to reselect the disk, etc.
But at the time of installation, the screen crashed and the message "No package could be installed. Please contact the software publisher for assistance. Quit the installer to restart your computer and then try again" appeared.
It seemed like the first part of the installation had been unlocked...
I will try with a bootable USB drive as mentioned in this topic: https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-36510486-besoin-d-os-el-capitan-ou-maverick-pour-macbookpro-2009-bloque-en-recovery
However, I am stuck at the same point: My second Mac runs High Sierra and I can't convert my El Capitan file to Application format... when I try to execute the pkg, I get an alert saying "This version of OS X 10.11 cannot be installed on this computer." I receive the same message through the app store.
Do you have any idea about this?
Thank you in advance.-
If you try to install El Capitan on a Mac that was delivered with High Sierra, it's a lost cause since it's impossible to install an OS that is older than the one that was pre-installed when bought new.
On the 2015 MBA, which was delivered with El Capitan, before starting the installation with the bootable USB key, which should be well prepared, you need to insert the key into a USB port, restart the Mac while holding down the option (alt) key without releasing it until you reach the startup disk selection window, select the USB key, and click enter.
When you arrive at the window with the error message, go to the utilities menu, launch Terminal, and change the time according to the instructions given earlier, then continue the installation, which should finish successfully.
Otherwise, here are the commands that allow you to reinstall/restore:
Restore Mac OS X
https://support.apple.com/fr-fr/HT201314
- "Command (⌘) + R" which allows you to install the latest version of macOS that was present on your Mac.
- "Option + ⌘ + R" which allows you to upgrade to the latest version of macOS compatible with your Mac.
- "Shift + Option + ⌘ + R" which allows you to install the version of macOS that came with your Mac when it was bought new, or the closest version still available.
Note:
The key combination must be pressed as soon as the Mac is powered on and held down until the desired effect, namely the appearance of the "macOS Utilities" window.

Thank you! Okay, I can't create a bootable OS X El Capitan USB drive.
The USB drive I have is a bootable High Sierra drive, which seems to be the only one I can download. The date change technique doesn't seem to work: I still get the message "The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.osinstall.error -3). Quit the installer to restart your computer."
From this screen, I don't have the option to return to the terminal (there's no menu bar at the top)
The date + High Sierra technique may not be compatible, but I have no way to obtain El Capitan.-
Have you tried starting with these keys Shift + Option + ⌘ + R" by holding them down throughout the startup? What happens?
I assume your Wi-Fi connection is good? It's better to be connected via Ethernet for this type of download, as there are fewer risks of interruptions, however brief they may be, that could disrupt the download. -
This launches a small planet that spins with a loading time: every time I encountered the error -5101F that appeared.
I tried again via ethernet and I didn't have the error! I continued the installation and I properly changed the date before launching it.
Now I have the screen saying "downloading additional components. Your computer will restart automatically" for about 6 hours.
I'll keep you updated.
Thank you very much for your help. -

It worked!
The downloads completed successfully and I was able to install El Capitan correctly with Cmd+R+Alt+Shift. I changed the date every time I had access to the terminal (even before installation after downloading the complementary elements)
Thank you thank you thank you for your help, I was completely lost in the processes and information.
Have a good evening! -
