Hello, I am also a bit uncertain after your question.
The gryzzly solution, which is similar to "Alt + Enter in Excel", doesn't seem to help much in my opinion (or at least on my Word) since you can simply press "Enter" while staying in the cell!

It occurs to me...
Just in case, check that your table rows are not blocked!:
_Select your table
_Taskbar / Table / Properties / Rows
_If the Fixed Row box is checked with a height specified, you are indeed writing in the cell, but the text does not appear anymore.
_To automatically size the cell, select the "at least" option and possibly remove the height specification above

Thus, the cell will grow with your text.
