Hello,
For three years, my Office Jet Pro 8710 printer worked without issues with authentic HP 953 regular or XL cartridges.
I had to select pages from a PDF document using the PDF printer on my PC; no problem with the printing. I regularly perform this task.
I switched back to normal printing on the Pro 8710 printer, and now the printer screen displays: you need to use new cartridges to start (the 4 colors are indicated) even though the cartridges are not empty.
After numerous attempts, including reinstalling, restoring, etc., the same message appears.
Since I need the printer, I went ahead with the change: I confirmed that authentic HP cartridges are installed, the color alignment is done, etc., and I received confirmation that the cartridge installation is okay.
But when I try to start a normal print, the message: you need to use new cartridges to start (still showing the 4 colors) reappears. The scanner function works well, and the PC-printer connections are also fine. I believe everything has been done: cleaning cartridges, print head, etc.; it is genuinely an issue at the cartridge/printer level - does anyone have an idea of what I should do next? Thanks in advance.

Hello,
And you can't see the symbol of an empty cartridge (even if it's wrong)??
-- There is no cartridge level detection......It's the counting of printed sheets that is decisive...
You may also have contact defects from the sensors on the chip of each cartridge..
Have you unplugged the wall outlet for five minutes and then plugged it back in...

Hello and thank you for your response.
On the printer window, I see all 4 cartridges listed with the text I mentioned in my first message - so all 4 are not recognized as full cartridges (they're not completely full, just lacking the ink used for alignment; printing actually worked well) - I can see the used space when I check the levels.
I also thought about the chips, but I don't think that's the issue because the problem arose before I changed the cartridges, without any manipulation of the cartridges (from printing a PDF to a regular print).
I unplugged, restored, reinstalled; yes, all has been done...
I remain convinced that it’s a problem related to the change in print style.
This is my office printer and it's been a huge disruption to my work since Friday.

Yes, there really are so-called SETUP cartridges from HP
https://www8.hp.com/h71041/learn-about-supplies/us/en/howInkIsUsed.html
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03107170/
Here’s a video that shows the menus... it's in English and for a different model, but I think it looks similar in the images, there are options in the menus...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fafralntZSc
And here, it is clear that there are different cartridges (Normal and Setup)
And strangely, I can't find anything on this subject in French...
You must have a manual with this printer...?? It seems hard to believe that they don't mention this issue..

Using SETUP cartridges
Use the SETUP cartridges that came with the printer for its initialization.
You need to replace the cartridge with a SETUP cartridge to clear this message. For
more information, see Replacing Print Cartridges.
Do not use SETUP cartridges
SETUP cartridges cannot be used once the printer has been initialized. Remove and
install non-SETUP cartridges. For more information, see Replacing
Print Cartridges.

I admit I don't fully understand what's happening to you...?? So the cartridges displayed are empty..?? Or is one of them empty..?? Or not..? on the display...??
You shouldn't check if there's ink left in the cartridges, it doesn't do any good, because the machine determines the ink level solely based on the number of pages printed (large or small) and absolutely not on the ink that remains in the cartridge... That's how it is.
What does the difference between a PDF print and a normal print mean to you..?? A printer... it just prints a dot, that's it... Whatever the PC sends it... Maybe we should also look at that side, the PC and its printing software..??
The style, the font, the company logo... etc... All of that is created on the PC.

Indeed, there are "starter cartridges," but these are cartridges delivered at the beginning, with a minimum amount of ink (like the tank in new cars..!) but nothing indicates that their functions are special...
I think there’s a "TRICK" with these cartridges... Or maybe it’s because you reset your install
Normally, by placing new cartridges, it should work...???
Here is the HP contact https://support.hp.com/fr-fr/contact-hp/product/hp-officejet-pro-8710-all-in-one-printer-series/7902014
If you read English, you can also look for the US technical support sites, they are often more comprehensive than the French ones... I will also see if I can find anything...
But for me, your problem is due to the cartridges... Or the person who sold them to you.

Everything is said here https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02068088
What is it for..??
Why..??
What happens if we don't use it ...??
Etc..
Here is the user guide http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05048385

You said this in your first POST: "when starting a normal print, the message: you must use new cartridges for the startup (with all 4 colors always)"
There is a nuance in language in this text new cartridges for the startup means in English "Setup cartridges," whereas in French, it goes unnoticed...
In the manual, page 101 it says:
You can check this site http://www.kookyoo.net/blog/farwarx/internet-sauve-imprimante-probleme-noir-papier-impression-couleurs-type-dcp-375cw-brother-hp-inkjet-transparent-00001375
All in all, your problem seems quite common... but not really the solutions... they talk about changing paper, etc... it does sound like a clogged print head... and the more you clean it, the more you clog it in a way...
If this solution yields no results, I would recommend flushing the head with a solution injected with a syringe into the ink cartridge holes... let's say about 5 to 10 drops of window cleaning product... let it act overnight before trying..
Be careful, it can run underneath, it's wise to place a folded paper towel underneath the head and slide it along to absorb...
I believe your message is only a consequence of the technical issue.

The instructions contained in this guide concern replacing cartridges and not their first installationThe only allusion is: "And not their first installation"... What should we guess?? That there are different cartridges for the first installation
