Hello,
On my Canon MX885 printer, at each startup the following message appears:
"Ink absorber almost full"
This is probably programmed obsolescence.
How can I remove this message?
Should I do a reset and how?

Hello,
I’ve looked around a bit, even on English-language sites, and I haven’t found how to reset the counter. The solutions provided concern rather old hardware.
Now the question is whether this is something to do. The ink absorber saturation is evaluated with a counter; in that sense one could talk about planned obsolescence. I don’t know how one could do otherwise (a level detector would probably not work).
So you have a message that tells you the absorber is almost full. There is obviously a margin of error. It is better to be warned in advance, because an absorber that overflows is particularly dirty and can cause damage. That’s what will happen to you if you manage to reset the counter.
So you will continue to use the printer until the absorber is considered full (still with a margin of error). Then the printer will probably stop and jam. You could consider it dead, because swapping the absorber pad with the help of after-sales service will cost you a lot. Again, one can wonder whether this is something to do, as there are certainly other parts of the printer that have aged, notably the print head.
These are not good news. We can only be outraged at what looks like a waste of hardware. Inkjet printers are practically unreparable. That is the real problem.
Have a good day. -
Thank you for this response.
Apart from the programmed end of my printer, what scandalizes me is the planned obsolescence of most of the hardware we use.
The planet is in bad shape but nothing changes!
We still need to know what type of printer will replace this one.
A inkjet? a laser? Which brand?
This is the second Canon product with which I have an obsolescence issue.-
I agree with you. Printers are high-tech devices and we discard them like household waste. What is unacceptable is that the message "Ink absorber nearly full" does not suggest that it actually signals the end of the printer. For choosing a new printer, it all depends on how you use it. If you print a lot of text, a laser printer is suitable. And you can have your photos printed online or in a specialized shop. It’s a solution worth considering, perhaps interesting given the price of cartridges.
