The application failed to start correctly (0xc000007b)

Hello,

I apologize in advance, but my problem is a bit long to describe. That said, I prefer to provide as many details as possible in the hope that someone can help me.

I have a PC running Windows 10 Home. Unable to access my BIOS, I followed advice on a forum that suggested holding the power button of my PC at startup. This actually turned off the PC almost instantly after it began to boot (quite logical, really).

Upon reboot, the PC could no longer find Windows. After some setbacks, I found that the only solution was to reinstall Windows 10 from the Windows recovery tool (the only thing I had access to when starting my PC).

At first, everything seemed to work well; I installed quite a few programs without encountering problems (Firefox, LibreOffice, VLC, etc.). However, I did run into a problem with two games (XCOM 2 and Frostpunk, to name a few) that had worked perfectly before.

The following message appears: "The application failed to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application."

After researching online, I see that this could be due to faulty DLLs. I am following the procedure outlined on this site:

https://www.carinna.fr/corriger-0xc000007b-lapplication-na-pas-reussi-a-demarrer-correctement/

But I cannot copy the msvcr100_clr0400.dll. Windows tells me it is in use (even in safe mode). And of course, my problem is not resolved.

I then decided to reinstall Windows 10 from a USB drive. I went to the Microsoft website to download the appropriate tool (MediaCreationTool1809) to create a USB drive.

Everything was working fine until about 90% of the process when I received the following message: "An error occurred while running this tool. We do not know what happened, but we could not run this tool on your PC. If this problem persists, contact customer service and provide the error code 0x80070005-0xA001A."

I tried three times to create a USB drive with this tool (using two different USB drives and different formatting types - NTFS and FAT32), always the same error message.

If anyone has any idea how to get me out of this problem, I am all ears because this clearly exceeds my skills, and I can't find an answer to my problem on the worldwide internet. Thank you in advance.

Sylvain

Configuration: Windows / Firefox 66.0

Hi,

See here: https://www.malekal.com/resoudre-erreur-0xc000007b-windows10/
Forget about the DLLs.
Try reinstalling the Visual C++ Redistributable.

and:

Press Windows + R
type winver and OK.
Give the version of Windows 10.

Hello,

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, reinstalling the Visual C++ Redistributable did not solve my problem.

My version of Windows is as follows:

Version 1809 (Operating System Version 17763.475)

Hello,

I followed the instructions from your link. Everything went as expected in your tutorial. However, I still get the same error when I launch Frostpunk or Xcom 2.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the games. It didn't change anything, still the same error "The application failed to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application."

Maybe you don't have the right Visual C++ for this game.
What antivirus is installed?

I just reinstalled Visual C++ Redistributable as described in your link above. The problem is still the same.

As for the antivirus, I was using Avira but I followed the advice from your Windows reinstallation tutorial and uninstalled it before reinstalling Windows. I haven't reinstalled it for the moment.

A small clarification regarding the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable packages, I took the most recent ones for Visual Studio 2017. On the following page, there are also packages for previous versions:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads

Do I also need to install the previous versions?

Xcom 2 was released in 2016, so it must be the one from 2015, I guess.
After that, try to reinstall the game completely or even Steam.

Unable to install Visual Studio 2015, the link on the Microsoft site is dead.

I have already reinstalled the game several times, I keep getting the same error.

Does anyone have any ideas to get me out of this situation?

Hello,

Thank you again for the time you are spending on my case (which seems increasingly hopeless).

I can't install Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 because "another version of this product is already installed." The 2017 version, in fact. I don't really want to uninstall 2017 to install 2015. It wouldn't make much sense (at least I think so).

Does anyone have any other ideas about the origin of my problem, which is the error: "The application failed to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application." when launching XCom 2 or Frostpunk.
