Hello everyone!

A few months ago, I bought a new car radio for my Peugeot 106, registered in 1998. The original unit wasn't working very well and needed a little refresh.
So I bought a Pioneer car radio. Very nice, feature-rich, in short, top-notch. When I got home, I asked someone more competent than me to install it. And there... Huge disappointment. The sound is horrible, inaudible at low volume, and at medium or high volume, the music is different; you can't hear the lyrics as if an anti-treble filter had been applied.

This week, driven by great curiosity, and fed up with listening to the radio on a €10 Bluetooth speaker from Carrefour, I decided to dismantle my car radio, thinking that a cable was misconnected, but no. Nothing.
At first, I thought about the car's antenna, but that's nearly impossible because even moving it around, the sound quality remains the same. I then thought about the speakers, but I figured two speakers failing at the same time wouldn't be bad luck but a reason to end it all lol (dark humor, sorry ;D) so now I'm doubting the quality of the cables. Maybe I made a mistake. Can you help me?

Hello again,
after a long absence, it's time to give an update on my situation.

A friend who knows about mechanics took a look at my car radio; he found that the cables were in good condition as they were protected by a thick fabric sheath.
The correct cables were connected to the right places. Only one fuse was preventing the car radio from turning on when the ignition was on, so he connected it to permanent power (I must remember to remove the faceplate of the radio if I don’t want to find my car's battery completely dead).

According to him, the issue was with the speakers, which were original and likely at the end of their life.

That same evening, I ordered a pair of Pioneer speakers, which I received the next day (thanks Amazon).
The day after receiving them, I connected the speakers (rather easy but time-consuming) and... it doesn't work.
I thought the problem was with the car radio, which wasn’t functioning, so I took it out to connect it to another vehicle, and it worked. So it's not the car radio that's at fault.

I then spent a long time searching for the cause of the problem and I realized something quite disturbing: a garage mechanic told me that “each speaker has its own color code for the wires” (basically, front left speaker: red for example, front right: green, etc.) and I noticed that each speaker had only one polarity, in short, the right speaker only had positive and the left speaker only had negative. I then swapped the wires so that each speaker had both positive and negative, and voilà, it works!

The problem was therefore not with the speakers but with the polarities being miswired (neither my friend nor my mechanic had noticed it), so to avoid wasting my 30€ speakers, I mounted them at the front and placed the old ones in the back because there was a spot for them. It was quite a lengthy process but worth it.
Today everything works perfectly and I’m quite proud of the DIY day I spent.

Thanks anyway to everyone for your help! :D
