How to turn a square photo into a medallion?

Hello, how can I use the PAINT software to transform a square photo into a medallion?
I want the parts outside this medallion to be removed.
That is to say, I want to end up with a circular or oval photo on my computer desktop.

Thank you very much.

P.S. Maybe it's not possible with PAINT.
If that's the case, is there another free software for this specific manipulation?

You can very easily do it with Photofiltre or Gimp, not forgetting to save your work in PNG

  Good evening, thank you very much for your response. I have watched the video above that you linked with your reply. So we have the circular dial of the watch with the remaining portion erased. The problem is that the photo as an entity is still square. What I would like is to have just a round photo with the pattern full screen inside.
  Perhaps this is possible in PAINT or GIMP, which I have downloaded?

  Very easy with Gimp:
  Open the photo
  Right-click in the layers window and add an Alpha channel
  With the elliptical selection tool, draw the selection you want
  Once the selection is moving - Menu select and inverse
  Edit - Delete
  Very important, save as PNG
  The white around is transparency, so if you place this photo on a background, the white will disappear and only the medallion will remain

  In the GIMP software, I visually have this grayed-out part like you have above. After that, I export it to my desktop as a png. However, when I open the image on my desktop, the medallion appears correctly and the grayed-out part is black. Furthermore, at the top of the photo, it says Mystery Fox.png - JPEGView. I must not be too far off? Thank you (for your patience...)

Is there a specific way to "export the PNG file" to my desktop?

I think this is the stage where there is a problem.

  Re......
  First, check if your image is in RGB mode
  -Menu Images- Modes - RGB
  Then to Export
  Menu -Files - Export As....
  In the window that opens
  -At the bottom left: Select the file type (depending on the extension)
  -With the slider choose PNG
  -Select the export location
  -And finish by Exporting
  And there you go, it should work

Well, I think I've managed to export the image as a PNG to my desktop. RGB and all.

In GIMP, the medallion appears correctly with the gray area around it. However, when I export it to the desktop, the gray area is no longer there. There's the medallion, and the area that was gray is now bluish.

Another issue that I didn't have before is that I can't upload the image here to show you. When I try to preview it, it says: MESSAGE BODY EMPTY. Yet the URL does appear! Strange. Maybe the image is too big??? Best regards.

  If you want it to work, add an Alpha channel (that's transparency) before cropping/selecting and export as .PNG because your image is in .JPG and that's why your background remains white: JPG does not support transparency.
  
  For the Alpha channel, right-click on the image in the layers window and --> Add an alpha channel before doing anything else, then crop and erase what you don't want and the background will be transparent...
  
  The name of your image at the time of export must be mystery.png and not mystery.jpg as it is currently, in the export bar you delete JPG, replace it with PNG and click export...

  Thanks Luke, I have already overcome this stage thanks to Viagers.
  The channel was added in GIMP before cropping.
  However, as I explained to Viagers, although I exported it as PNG, for some unknown reason I can't upload it here for you to see.
  
  Every time I upload it from my desktop to CCM, it says "processing" then DONE! on a green background. The URL then appears in my message but when I want to preview it, it says: "MESSAGE BODY EMPTY." and the photo doesn't appear! In fact, it tells me "incorrect parameters."

  Yes, but with an image exported as JPG and therefore no more alpha channel:
  
  It's not enough to just add PNG at the end for the image to become PNG; you need to delete .JPG and replace it with PNG by writing it after the dot, otherwise you go into the export formats and choose PNG...

The original photo of mystery fox on my desk is jpeg.

I upload it into gimp.
I go to layer then transparency then add alpha channel.
Then I outline the photo in a medallion.
Then I go to select then invert.
Then in edit to erase what is outside the medallion.
I go to images, check if it's in "RGB" mode.
Then before "export as", I choose to export in png.
I then export the medallion to the desktop with the title mysteryfox.png
When I click on this medallion on the desktop, it confirms that it's a png file.

So, where is the mistake?

It's amazing that if we don't include a text or word with the photo, we can't publish it!!! GIMP is a handy yet complicated tool... Thanks to Viagers and Luke for their patience... and invaluable help!

What happens, at least on my computer, is that if you try to post an image as I've done above, you need to upload the image of course, but also put some text or a word in the dialog box; otherwise, it doesn't work!

As strange as that may seem...
