WoL does not work

Hello,

I would like to use Wake-on-LAN (WOL), but I can't get it to work.

I'm on Windows 10. From the device manager, properties of my network card, I have the following options:

WoL / Network speed shutdown: 100 Mbps first
Wake on Magic Packet: Enabled

Then I have options like (I don't know if this changes much)
Allow Wake by Magic Packet: Enabled (Disabling it doesn't change anything)
Energy-saving Ethernet: Disabled
Green Ethernet: Disabled

In the "Power Management" of my network card, I've enabled all options:
> Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
> Allow this device to wake the computer from sleep mode
> Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer from sleep mode
(what I see here in parentheses is that it only applies to sleep mode, and not to a complete "shutdown" of the computer).

My PC is connected via Ethernet, behind a Livebox. I want to do WOL (so internally, in my LAN).

My network card is a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller, with the driver in its latest version according to Windows update (v 10.2.703.2015 from 03/07/2015).

From my BIOS, I found no option to enable or do anything regarding WOL.

Thank you in advance for your help,
Best regards,

Hi

Wake on LAN via networks: Enabled (Disabling doesn't change anything)

Not good, it needs to be disabled

Then, how do you send the magic packet?

First, check that it actually reaches the concerned PC with Wake on LAN Monitor

Thank you for your incredibly quick reply :)

I wasn't aware of this really handy tool.
Indeed, I do not receive (according to the software) any packets. Is it normal for UDP to be on 4343?

I attempted to send the magic packet from one computer running Windows (https://www.dipisoft.com/; WakeOnLan v3.9.7) and from my Raspberry (running Debian, with 2 different tools). No change.

I have disabled the function as requested

(ps: my username has changed because I registered on the site, but I am the same person)

Thank you for your help,
best regards

I just tested with the Depicus tool for WOL, and my PC seems to be receiving the packets well; but the PC does not wake up once turned off

My apologies, I gave you some nonsense.

Here are my settings with the same network card as yours:

Wake on LAN: Enabled
Wake on Magic Packet: Enabled
WoL/Shutdown network speed: 10 Mbps first

Driver version (I had quite a few issues with WoL regarding this with the default W10 drivers):

Provider: Realtek

10.28.615.2018 from 06/15/2018

https://realtek-download.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/0029-Install_Win10_10028_07252018.zip

After that, it comes down to the BIOS, but some motherboards indeed don't have anything (for example, the Gigabyte in my partner's PC), everything happens at the driver level under Windows.

What brand and model is yours?

I will manually update the driver with the one you provided.

For my BIOS, it's an MSI

after updating the driver, no changes; nothing works :(

You're lucky, it's the same motherboard as mine:

there is indeed a setting in the BIOS:

I just changed the option as indicated (it was indeed set to OFF), but no change :(

What tool do you use for WOL?
How do you enter the information in it?

The problem is not how we fill it out since the magic packet arrives fine

After adjusting the BIOS, did you save it, restart and shut down Windows?

To answer your question, I start the PC with the utility volcmd using a simple bat file that contains:

wolcmd MAC_address_of_the_network_card local_IP_address_of_the_network_card 255.255.255.0 7

Strangely, once the PC is turned off, the network card doesn't blink.
I did the same in "hibernate," nothing works; however, in "sleep," it works.

So, it must indeed come from something else :(

Uh, WOL should be able to wake up a completely powered-off PC, right? (Maybe it's just me being dumb) because I'm having a big doubt about that.

At least this time it works well in sleep mode (unlike before ^^)

Because my initial goal (if possible) is to wake up a completely turned-off PC.

It wakes up a PC that is off from Windows shutdown

It all depends on what you call: a completely turned off PC

It's certain that if you cut the power, it won't work (There needs to be a voltage on the network card via the motherboard)

No, it's a powered-off PC with Windows shutdown (that's what I want ^^) and that's exactly what I thought (because some sites talk about PCs in sleep mode, which seemed strange to me).

So that's exactly what I want to do, and the problem is still not resolved :(

And indeed, the network card doesn't seem to be blinking (shouldn't it be blinking when WOL is activated?)

Strange

Same network card, same driver, same motherboard at my place and it doesn't work at yours??

No blinking LED on the network card when the PC is off

Your wood is old, update it

to make sure of my settings, here is a screenshot.
I will try a BIOS update as mentioned; and I'll get back as soon as it's done :)

thank you

Hello,

Sorry for the late reply (I was in the middle of moving; and I've finally got my internet line back).
Um, I need to check that; but since I updated the BIOS, it beeps every time I start it up :(

That's normal, it's a default option.

uh, my BIOS update didn't work, I'm still on an old version. That tool was a bit crappy.

I'll check how to update it first =(

Which option is for the beeps so I can turn it off? =)

I just updated the BIOS and this time it's good (for the BIOS version). I have the same one as you.
I put the option for wake on LAN back in the BIOS.

Nothing works :( no change :(

?? Same motherboard, same BIOS, same WOL option, same network card and same driver with the same settings... I don't see any other leads except for a failure on the motherboard... Sorry.

Okay, I'll contact MSI directly to see if we forgot something.
Thanks anyway for the time spent on my issue!

If by any chance you also know the option to disable that beep at startup ^^

If I get a solution from MSI, I will come back to share it here.

Thank you

It's in the boot section of the BIOS

Option POST beep

Good luck with MSI support.

I've dealt with them, not very competent.
