Hello everyone,
I don't know if I'm in the right place. Please excuse me.
I find that my son has a huge data consumption on his mobile phone, but I have no idea what can be done with 1 GB.
He claims that he's never on his phone except to do his homework and, according to him, "only" his homework because everything seems to be digitized: the classes (books "photocopied" by the teachers), the "homework planner," and the writing and sending of assignments.
It's almost like homeschooling. Strange for a blended learning program. But I don't believe a word of it; the poor darling is overwhelmed with homework!
So, my question is: what can one do with just 1 GB?
How many
- songs can be stored
- then listened to (number of hours)
- hours (or minutes) of games, with or without chatting with other "students"
- movies watched via streaming
- or downloaded
- email consultations
- downloading documents from the email
- writing documents and sending them
Is there any "extra charge" during certain hours?
As you can see, I know nothing about this area and concrete examples would help me a lot. I thank in advance everyone who will enlighten me.

Hi,
All of this is difficult to quantify. Music has a size that varies based on quality,
The same goes for games; it's hard to know because depending on the games, it's more or less important.
A movie streamed is already 1GB or even more, similar to if it's being downloaded. In both cases, the file is downloaded.
As for emails, that already adds up, unless attachments are included.
On the other hand, consuming only 1GB per month for a young person is almost abnormal. I consume almost half of that in a day... :-)

Thank you for your response.
I am strict, but he doesn't just have 1 gig for his month :-)). He has 50. He is with Orange and his quota went from 30 (where he was managing) to 50, where he seems to be struggling a bit more to finish the month.
But for me, to try to gauge what he does (keep your secret... secret! from him) and since it's a bit beyond me, I wanted to quantify on 1 Giga (the basic unit, like a meter or a liter).
For example, over the last 2 days, he has consumed something like 2 GB per 24 hours. Except that today, he is in the kitchen and theoretically shouldn’t need to use his phone. We haven’t invented the phone that stirs sauces yet! I suppose he has other things to do at this time (1:00 PM).
A song when it is downloaded doesn’t consume any more “energy” for listening, right? It’s a bit like buying a book. You pay to have it, but after that, you can turn the pages as much as you want.
He claims that he watches very few, if any, movies, so logically, he should consume very little.
As for games, that’s where it gets really unclear (keep...).
When he got this phone in May, he racked up €90 in excess charges. He denied going on the thing he had “NEVER heard of.” He is very slowly starting to open up, 6 months later, and claims he doesn’t remember. So from our side now, caution is needed. Moreover, his school grades are not great!
Thank you for your explanations which broaden my perspective and reassure me in the idea that he has got the phone attached to his fingertips, which we feared.
Thank you again and have a great end to your week.

Negative. If it's a streaming app (as is increasingly the case on mobile), the song is streamed in a "continuous" flow from the server... Like a web radio.
So, with each listen to a piece of music, the file gets downloaded. Therefore, it depends on how it reads/listens to its audio file.
Check with the provider if a daily consumption report is possible, that could give you an indication of its daily usage.
Moreover, depending on the devices, if updates for apps are made using mobile data, that also consumes...!
And I'm not even talking about YouTube, Spotify, and the like, which are very popular among young people...
Hello!
Before my 20GB plan, I had a 2-hour 100MB plan for about a year and a half. It sounds scary, but I got used to it :)
Now I consume about 5GB a month :)
