Good evening everyone :)
This forum is really great! I've been calling and going around in circles for at least three weeks... and here, there is a dedicated forum!

I have a friend who is a baker, whose cash register has broken down. OS: XP SP1. He is to blame, not the management software. He fell, and I need to reinstall it.

Yes, but... Having never installed an OS on a cash register, how do I access the BIOS to change the boot sequence?

That's all I need to know. I will get the drivers from the Sharp website, and anyway, I also have software to extract them before reinstallation.

Is there anyone here who has this information?

    Hi,

    It works the same way as a PC, so plug in a keyboard and try F2, F8, F12... at startup. Just any F something. Otherwise, if you look closely, it’s visible for a few seconds during startup.

    Personally, on the machines I use, it's F2 to boot from a USB drive and F8 to enter the BIOS.

    Well. I struggled for a while.
    The ESC key takes me, like on an HP computer, to the entry of the BIOS.
    At the moment when "Setup available" appears, it's already in graphical form. Just before Windows starts.
    I mean: the entry. Not the BIOS itself.
    The USB peripherals are well detected (I had prepared a bootable hard drive with an old 32-bit Lubuntu.
    At the bottom of the screen, I have "Enter key ...." to enter the "setup".
    I suppose that's it, the BIOS?

    Problems:
    1- which key ?? I've tried a bunch... nothing :( ESC, DEL, F1...
    2- it only lasts a second, at most. I will sort this out in the BIOS... once I'm in.

    I tried the other keys F2, F8, etc., but I ended up with ESC. After that, DEL, F1, F2, etc. lead nowhere.
    Could this "Enter key" be a BIOS password? If the guys who installed the system put that in, I'm in trouble :/

    I also detected passwords and licenses with Recall portable. Stupefaction: the VNC password is the acronym of their company: "Machin Chose Truc": MCT. Uh...

    In your opinion: have I come across a BIOS access password or not?

      Hey,

      Ouch! But it’s not dead, you’ll just need to tinker a little bit. You need to get inside and remove the battery for about thirty seconds, then put it back. That should do the trick.

    So it would be a BIOS password then?
    Just the battery? No jumper like on PC motherboards?

    OK ;)
    Luckily, the owner is more handy than I am :D Hardware, in general, I don't touch. But well: we're going to remove that battery.

        Arf... not always. Sometimes removing the BIOS battery doesn't clear the password! :-(

        I removed the battery and then put it back one minute later.
        Restart: message in English mentioning the CMOS and the date.
        With ESC, I pretend I'm entering the BIOS. Delete key: "Entering setup"... and this s*** boots from the HDD.
        I also removed a jumper and then reattached it.
        Same thing.

        Does that ring a bell?
        What a headache :D !!

    So, I'm removing the battery. If that doesn’t work, I need to do a hardware clear-CMOS.
    The jumper should be located somewhere...

    @Rosi: I just came back from my assembler.
    According to him, the BIOS password is not in the CMOS. It would be on another component of the mobo.
    I'm going to attempt an install of XP SP2 from an XP CD, but without booting from it.
    I don't even remember if you can do that. It's so old...

    In your opinion: did I do the right thing in getting rid of the BIOS password?

      Oh damn!

      Does your car also have a CD player? If so, great, even simpler. Or maybe I didn't get it at all :-/

      Afterwards, it's complicated for me not to know your car, especially from a distance to know exactly what's going on. Mine are so simple.

      And haven't you tried the other keys for booting without entering the BIOS since?

    I know, it's difficult ;)
    No: no CD drive. USB ports, yes.
    I tried several function keys. Only the DELETE key shows me this message "Entering setup..."
    CD drive: are you thinking of installing Windows from the CD? I can't remember if that's possible (it's so old!)

    I created an ISO of my WinXP SP2 CD, and I’m going to make a flash drive bootable with an adapter.
    It'll be the same thing.
    But the XP Setup doesn't seem to work like that, on my machines at home. The "Install Windows" line is grayed out.

    It seems to me that I used to boot from the XP CD to install it. Could it be done another way?

    And that famous message "Entering key" has disappeared. It looks like I'm making progress...

    Good evening, Rosy.
    I'm in my computer room at home. The machine is beside me.

    I removed the hard drive, and with an IDE connector, I was able to make an Acronis image.
    I haven't put it back on the machine yet.

    1) By pressing DELETE at startup, I enter the BIOS. There, I get this message: "Waiting SETUP Entry key ..... "
    So, I haven't removed the BIOS password, right?

    The screen displays:
    Phoenix NoteBIOS 4.0 Release 6.0
    SHARP POS System [UP-X5 Series] Firmware Version 1.0B [052004104810]

    At the bottom left:
    Waiting SETUP Entry key .....

    2) Ideas:
    2.1: Flash the BIOS? Why not?
    2.2: With GParted or Paragon, resize the partition, create one just behind it, and install on that. Since XP is running on the machine, it should be possible.
    2.3: Install XP on another machine. At a minimum: not too many drivers, especially. Then, put the hard drive on that one.

    Is it doable?
    I'll check the Sharp website to see if there's a BIOS. That will be the last resort. Tomorrow, I'm going to show up at the company that sold it, and someone will surely tell me how to do it... If they see a hassle showing up who wants a little help, since they weren't the ones scamming the baker, they'll probably give in.

    @Rosy: does what I'm describing make sense to you? Did I manage to remove the BIOS password? It doesn’t seem like it...

    Here we go!!!
    I'm in the BIOS!!

    I had to press '7' on the numpad and at the same time the '.'
    I'm going to try to boot from a USB device.

    In the "Main" tab, I see a submenu "Primary Master" [None].
    Makes sense: I've removed the hard drive.

    Through this menu, I have the option, in the boot sequence, between FD (floppy, ok), CD, and IDE which includes the internal hard drive.
    I'm giving it a shot with a USB device and WinXP SP2 on it.

    I'll keep you posted, of course.

    Hello everyone.

    Bad news.
    Cannot install XP. It reports an error Code: 0x0000007B.

    Message from the XP installer:
    ""A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent any damage to your computer.
    If you see this screen again... follow these steps:
    check for viruses
    remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers.
    Check your hard drive... properly configured and terminated.
    Run chkdsk /f... "

    I’ve tried everything, nothing works.
    I’m going to replace this hard drive. But: are the ones for sale the same for laptops as this one? 2.5 inches, IDE.
    And I can’t know that without your opinion.

    Here’s the culprit:

    Does that ring a bell? If I buy a 2.5 inch IDE hard drive, will it work on it?
