Hello,
After changing the hard drive on an old PC that was still running Vista (dual boot with Linux), I would like to boot from a USB stick that a friend gave me, assuring me it was bootable (he's an IT guy…). This is to install Windows 10
the problem is that it doesn’t boot. After looking around the forums, it seems that it might be an issue with the motherboard.
I would like to boot from a DVD instead. However, I cannot find the ISO image in the files on the USB stick and so I don’t know what to copy to the DVD
I could download the ISO from elsewhere on the internet, but I only have the activation for that specific system.
Here is what my USB stick displays:
and here is what appears when I open X86, which is the version I want to install:
I cannot reach my friend who is on vacation at the other end of the world.
Thank you all very much!

Hey!
Seeing the files on the USB drive, it is supposed to be bootable. What is the model of the PC?
Generally, you need to press the Escape key, or F11 or F12 (depending on the model) when starting the PC to enter the boot menu to choose which device to boot from.

Hi
Use the tool provided by Microsoft to create a bootable drive with the Windows 10 installation on it:
https://www.microsoft.com/fr-fr/software-download/windows10
You plug your USB drive into the PC, and you launch the tool; it should detect it and copy the files onto it.
Then, you boot from it; if it doesn't work, you need to change the BIOS settings to set the USB drive as the first boot option.
After that, saying that your PC will work with Windows 10 is another issue :)

So I would say forget your friend's key and his Ent version, and buy a key for €7 on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.fr/Windows-professionnel-bits-DACTIVATION-UNIQUEMENT/dp/B01759H62S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1532178505&sr=8-1&keywords=windows+10+pro
And as long as crosoft doesn't put a stop to these keys sold online, you shouldn't hold back.
It activates with the Windows activation center without any problem, so why not for €7
and you'll have all the leisure to enjoy a legal and easily installable 10 pro by the average person on your PC which I assume is in BIOS.

Why not indeed. That said, some comments on the product in question are hardly encouraging... at the same time... it’s only 9 euros lost (including shipping costs!)
But before giving up, I still want to try to boot from this f***ing USB stick!
I finally managed to get into the BIOS. But for now, my attempts aren’t yielding anything. Talk to you soon, I’ll keep trying. I like to understand. Thanks anyway! :)

There are no shipping fees; it's a delivery of the key via email, and it's clearly stated in the link I’m giving you!
Price: EUR 6.98 FREE SHIPPING.
And by putting the USB key first in the BIOS, it doesn't boot from it?
That's why initially, I was having you redo the key, to be 100% sure it was bootable and functional. I've already had issues with keys that worked 2 or 3 times for installation, and then nothing, no boot, with the same key and the same files...
But here, on a Linux, I don't know how to create this key, especially if the site redirects you somewhere I don't know!

Well... Mission accomplished! W10 installed and activated, all thanks to my friend's key!
In fact, and if this can help others, I was misled by the presentation of the menu that opens with F12 that offers:
Hard disk
CD rom
Since I didn't see "USB key," I thought it wasn't recognized.
And after some back and forth in the BIOS to change the boot order (without seeing any change in that infamous menu), I finally clicked on "Hard disk" and found my key waiting for me! It was recognized as a hard drive.
For the rest, no issues, neither for the installation nor for the activation with the Microsoft Toolkit provided on the key and with the paper instructions from my friend.
But... I hadn't set foot in Windows since Vista and really... I hate it!!! What a nightmare! That awful feeling of being tracked, having no choices, no freedom... I totally understand why I love my Ubuntu!
There’s going to be a lot of work to get rid of all the unnecessary stuff and customize it to my liking!
Not to mention that of course, Windows overwrote my Grub (which allows me to choose Windows or Linux at startup) and so I need to reinstall my Ubuntu. Well... I'm not surprised at all, I anticipated it but I had still made a little cozy nest on my NTFS drive for Windows. That wasn't enough. It has to spread everywhere, overwriting everything else.
Linux, on the other hand, respects its neighbors. No problem installing it alongside Windows.
On that note, a big thank you to everyone who tried to help me! And have a good evening!

ok
the superfluous, look here, quite a few tips, I'm putting the general page, see the links that interest you
https://www.malekal.com/tag/windows-10/
personally, I disabled everything, only W10 remains, and it runs very well (like W7 actually)
since W10, you can "repair" your grub without having to reinstall Ubuntu, but if you had planned for it, that’s good, otherwise, I’ll give you another link, it seems to be for W8, but the repair principle is the same
thanks for your feedback ^^

You guys are rockets!!! :)
So... Tip 72, I'm going to check out the tool you're suggesting.
And yes, it should work with Windows 10! My PC is from 2008 (yes, yes!) and my friend, who is against the consumer race, assured me it could work. Anyway, my main OS will remain Linux (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS).
But dual-booting is practical, and if we’re doing it, it might as well be with Windows.
Meuhlol (I love your username! LOL), my PC is an ACER, I don’t have any other info.
I’ve already pressed F12 but the USB key doesn't show up in the boot options.....
Well, I have to leave for an hour or two and I’ll be back if you’re still around ;)
I’m really impressed by the speed of the responses!! Thank you!

astuces72, the page that opens with your link, I already came across it yesterday, it offers me to download the Windows 10 ISO (I am redirected because I am operating from Linux)
I would like to avoid going through the proposed ISO image because I'm not sure that the activation offered by my friend will work...

Hello
if you don't know, don't do it!
Have you checked that your PC supports Windows 10 and that the drivers are available?
All posts like this have ended in "failure", especially on old PCs.
Moreover, if I understand correctly, you want to activate Windows illegally, which is against CCM's policy
I'd like to see what's in "activation" ??
Another thing, your "IT" buddy who is unreachable and is at the other end of the world is really not helping you ?? He could have installed it before leaving, that's not cool? (that's irony)

Dear Uncle Sebastien, my story about a friend on the other side of the world is true. And if he didn't set everything up for me, it's because I usually manage perfectly fine. Yesterday I changed my hard drive and I'm used to installing operating systems, especially in dual boot since I use Linux. When he gave me this USB stick, I didn't think I would run into any difficulties. To me, it was supposed to work like a bootable CD. Except that's not the case.
As for compatibility with W10, I don't need to verify anything. If it doesn't work, I'll install another version, W7 or even, at worst, go back to Vista. Windows is only for running my printer. And maybe to help me troubleshoot if I have bugs in Linux (by checking specialized forums).
You might be surprised, but Vista helped me out quite recently even though it's been out of date since... the age of rats.
So is my version of W10 legal? It is. It’s an "enterprise" version that was not pirated from the internet but was paid for to be installed on several PCs.
Now if what breaks your heart is that I didn't personally pay my dues to a multinational as unscrupulous as Microsoft, I'm sorry for you, but I'm not going to buy an OS just to please you.
I'm not asking for help to pirate anything.
I'm just asking which files from my USB stick I need to copy onto a CD to make it bootable.
Either you know, or you don't. And in my opinion, you don't. But if you do know and don’t want to help me, then don’t. I’ll manage anyway.
Have a nice afternoon!

do as you see fit? I don't understand your reaction, my intervention seems correct to me? Just some advice?
reinstall Vista or Seven then, much less complicated in your case!
I'll give you a hint for booting:
uefi/gpt - bios/mbr
just check if you have a BIOS update
copy everything to your DVD, no worries, don't overcomplicate it, the content is the same on USB or DVD.
enterprise version on a personal computer, hmm, not very kosher, I hope for your sake that you can activate it?
that's why I wanted to see the content of the "activation" folder
good luck

My reaction is due to your ironic tone at the end of the post, implying that you were questioning my words.
Thank you for your suggestion even though I’m not quite sure what to do with it or how to use it.
As for copying everything onto a DVD, I did that but it doesn't work. It won't boot. So far, I've always booted with .ISO files.
Enterprise version on a rather shady PC... Why, are you from the CIA? Sure, you never download movies or music, you never copy software, etc... well, you’re a saint, congratulations! And still, from my point of view, monsters like Microsoft, who also impose their monopoly, do not deserve such scruples. I reserve my scruples for the small developers.
Come on, no hard feelings, uncle! ;)

And you see, uncle... what makes me angry (and it's not your fault) is that Microsoft doesn't play fair in the competition!
It dominates the market so much that printer manufacturers and others tend to work only for Microsoft (or Apple), so it's hard to find drivers for certain printers.
As for software, it's a monopoly again. Free software reads documents created on Windows perfectly. However, I have to save everything in a compatible version for my documents to be readable by my friends on Windows!
Do you think that's normal? Do you think that's "catholic"?
