Also try using another browser while disabling ad-blocker extensions and the antivirus (temporarily).

I have the same problem, and since the beginning of the year, being a frequent traveler, here's my observation:
- If I'm at home behind my Freebox: I open Gmail in Chrome, and it's impossible to open a message or access the various command menus; if I open Gmail in Explorer: everything works,
- If I'm abroad on the hotel network: everything works with Chrome?

I conclude that there is a blockage at the level of my internet gateway at home?....

1- As indicated here, thanks to Xileh whom I greet for the link, you need to use ResetBrowser.
See if the situation improves after this little cleanup.

2- Google Chrome
Disable 'Allow Chrome Sign-in'

1. Open Google Chrome, click on the 3 dots icon (main menu) located in the upper right corner of the window.
2. Now select the "Settings" option from the main menu.
3. This will open the Chrome settings page. Scroll down and click on the "Advanced" option.
4. In the "Privacy and security" section, set the "Allow Chrome sign-in" option to OFF.

3- The antivirus.
Some antivirus programs like Avast or Kaspersky, AVG, and Avira have an option to scan HTTPS addresses or encrypted connections, just uncheck the box which is usually found in the network or firewall section of the antivirus.

4- Subscribers of SFR are currently experiencing email issues not just with Gmail.
SFR explains that a server has been down for a week but that the situation is returning to normal
maybe not for everyone.
