Hello,
I am using Windows 10 Pro, and for the past two weeks, a Performance Options window opens itself almost every hour.
I always click Cancel or close the window, but nothing works; it keeps appearing.
Could this be the work of a virus or simply an option to uncheck somewhere?
Thank you
Configuration: Windows / Chrome 66.0.3359.181

Hello,
Please check carefully in the Task Manager which process this application is linked to. Once you find it, right-click and open the file location.
This will allow us to learn more about this "Performance Options" window. :-)
Best regards, -
Hello,
This event only appears on my work computer (which I don't have access to today), but I managed to locate the path to the window.
It is found in System -> Advanced system settings -> Performance settings.
Can this help or is this information useless since it's not on the correct computer? -
Good evening,
Yes, that could be the solution, even though it seems unlikely to me.
Click on the "Settings" tab that appears in the Performance tab. In the "visual effects," choose "Custom settings" and uncheck everything that doesn't seem essential to you (in my personal case... pretty much everything! :-). Restart your computer and see if that resolves the issue. But honestly, as long as we don't know which process this window is linked to on your work computer, we'll be working in the dark... -
Hello,
I haven't done everything you suggested yet, but it has reappeared and this time I noted what was in the task manager.
So apparently, this window comes from an executable named SystemPropertiesPerformances.exe. The file path is C//Windows/System32/4743/SystemPropertiesPerformances.exe
I checked, the 4743 folder doesn't exist on the other computers in the company and it only contains the executable.
So, would it be enough for me to delete this folder containing the .exe to solve the problem? -
Hi,
No, don't do that. You risk: at best accomplishing nothing at all, and at worst making your system completely unstable.
SystemPropertiesPerformances is a "normal" Windows executable, but given what you describe, it has probably been "vampirized" by malware.
Can you:
1) Type winver<ital> in the command prompt and send me a screenshot to determine exactly which version of Windows you have.
2) Download the free version of <ital>Spybot Search and Destroy and run the malware scan, then send me another screenshot? -
Hello,
Sorry for the late reply, but I haven’t had access to the computer until today.
I ran the command you gave me, and here is the result:
I also installed Spybot. However, this software didn't seem very safe to me, and when I wanted to run the scan, it asked if it could make changes to my computer. Since that seemed suspicious, I refused.
Here’s what I have, is this the right software?

Hello!
- So you're on Win 10 but you haven't installed the (way too) famous 1803 yet.
This version has caused many problems for millions of users, but as far as I'm concerned, for "non-tech-savvy" users, I recommend always having the latest update installed for system stability reasons.
So run the command Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth (as Admin of course) to update your OS.
- As for Spybot, I definitely do not advise you to keep it, buy it, or anything like that. What interests me is that the free version is very powerful in detecting malware. To remove them, you need to purchase it! :-( To put it simply: by selecting "Scan System", we should at least know if one of those damn software has managed to infect your PC...
