Philips VR 550 VCR
Solved
Hello,
unable to bring myself to throw away my video tapes, I just took out my Philips tape recorder. After several attempts to play with different (original) recordings, the image skips and the sound is barely audible. However, when I switch to fast forward, the image (in black and white) appears less distorted,
which is not normal. Before removing the cover to dig deeper into my investigations, some advice would be very helpful! Thank you for your assistance.

It works perfectly, I have a Philips VR418 that will undergo the same cleaning operation!

Super, so the question goes green... ;)
Hi,
Buy a cleaning cassette like this one so that the playback/recording heads can be clean.
Over time, there must have been dust that got stuck on them.

Hello Daddy
After two runs of the cleaning tape, I have sound but the picture is distorted, or the screen goes blue (no image). I'm going to need to open the beast for a more serious examination; I've changed the Scart cable, so nothing on that front. I'm waiting for some advice!
Thanks, best regards.

Hello,
It is possible that the tape heads are worn out, but we must also consider that magnetic tapes degrade over time...
Otherwise, before playing a cassette (that hasn't been used for a long time), it's advisable to fast-forward and then rewind quickly to tension the tape; otherwise, there is a risk of breaking the magnetic tape (this is mentioned in the manual). This procedure may slightly improve the quality in playback mode...
