Hello,
I'm on El Capitan and using Numbers 3.5.3,
When I open a table, there are initially say 20 columns, so I used the little round button with the parallel sign " just at the top right of the table, and I was able to add columns... Up to column IU. It's impossible to add more columns, as if I've hit the limit.
Even if I go to 'Table', 'Insert Column After' is grayed out, so I can't click on it.
How can I exceed this number of columns? Indeed, I would like to create an annual table, therefore having 365 columns, it must be possible, right?
Thank you in advance for your responses.
Fabien

Hello,
the maximum number of columns is 255. So the iU column is the last possible one.
I had tested this in the past, and I just ran the test again.
From what I remember from past readings, I believe the issue is due to a coding problem with x or X bits. Kind of like what happened in the early days of Excel.
Maybe the next version will exceed this limit. It is true that this limit is rarely reached. We'll need to find a workaround for this.
Best regards.
EDIT:
If we consider that the issue is indeed due to an 8-bit coding for determining the number of columns, we can see that this number is indeed limited to 255.
I made a small table to show this:

Thank you for this response,
I'll have to see what the 8-bit x is, but okay.
It's really strange to create a spreadsheet and not be able to make a plan for the year!
Especially since we can put 365 rows. It works one way and not the other. Really strange.
Well, I guess I'll make two 6-month tables then...
Thanks again.

Hello Fabien,
Unless I'm mistaken, Numbers tables are limited to 256 columns.
So ... either switch to Excel or Open Office, or make the table the other way around, with 365 rows. ;-)

Hello @nnie,
thank you for the response.
I still can't believe that we can't create a table for a year...
So I'm trying Open Office, and when I do
File
New
Spreadsheet
the spreadsheet that opens goes up to column AMJ
and has a very very very large number of rows.
Well, I wasn't able to delete the unnecessary rows and columns!
How can I set the number of rows and columns?-
The "extra" rows and columns are of no importance, as they are not taken into account during printing.
If it's for an issue of moving around within the sheet, there are keyboard shortcuts that allow you to reach the beginning or end of the workbook, the beginning or end of a row, etc.
See here => the list of these shortcuts. ;-)

Rather than OpenOffice, I recommend LibreOffice, which is more developed, more stable, and allows for the desired number of columns...

See you later
