Hello everyone,
Here is my problem, which is a nested issue, multiplying my problems due to my incompetence in IT:
- I have an external hard drive, which I had configured on Mac (macOS version 10.6.8) to make it compatible with Windows (with ExFAT format). It was working well, but now it doesn't work anymore. So I tried to reformat the hard drive on Mac. And then...
- The hard drive has issues, even on the Mac itself. I can't really copy documents onto it, it takes ages, it only copies part of the documents from a folder... And backups via Time Machine no longer work properly. I'm trying to repair or verify the disk and I'm told that it is "unable to unmount."
- I went digging in the forums and tried to access the "Recovery HD" mode to repair the disk via Disk Utility (I think I understood that this is what I should do). But when I try to restart the computer and press "cmd+R," or "alt," the only thing I'm offered is to choose a Wi-Fi network, meaning that I'm not being offered Disk Utility. And when I choose the Wi-Fi network, there’s a message with a warning sign like an error message, and nothing happens.
In short: I believe I need to start by repairing the hard drive, but how do I do that? It's a work Mac, and I don't have the installation disk...
I hope this makes some sense (because I'm having a hard time finding any). If you could help me, that would be really nice.
Thanks everyone!
Emi

Try this:
- Quit Disk Utility
- Connect your external drive
- When it appears on the desktop, move it to the trash, or right-click on it to request its ejection
- The system will then attempt to eject it; if it fails, it will suggest forcing its ejection. Request to force its ejection.
Once ejected, launch Disk Utility and format it as indicated.

Always indicate your system configuration in full - exact computer model, exact OS version.
