Hello,

I’m trying to help my girlfriend who has a Mac. Even though I know a bit about computers, I don’t know much about Apple devices.
Basically, her computer suddenly froze, we turned it off, and upon restarting, a question mark appeared in a folder instead of the Apple logo.

I reset the PRAM but it didn’t change anything...

I took out the hard drive from the machine, had it tested, and everything seemed fine... Since we can easily access the content from another Mac, I went ahead and bought a 160GB 2.5" HDD, installed it in the machine, and put the original HDD in a USB enclosure for safekeeping.
Since my girlfriend doesn’t have the Lion CD, I’m downloading one and burning it onto a dual-layer DVD, everything is fine...

The Mac starts up with the CD, the Apple logo appears for 15 minutes and the installation program starts.
In Disk Utility, everything appears (the DVD and the new 160GB HDD, plus some other things that seem to be duplicates, in fact). To test a bit, I thought that even if the new HDD is in RAW format, I might as well try to format it manually in Mac OS Extended, but it doesn’t work (error message that I can't recall).
Never mind, I’ll start the reinstallation anyway, agree to the contract, and at the moment of selecting a hard drive for the installation, nothing happens, no drives appear and the page remains as it is even after 15 minutes...

I’m stuck here... Thank you for reading this long message!

Best regards, Max.

P.S.: I also tested the installation via the internet, but got the same result...

Configuration: Linux / Firefox 23.0

    Hello,

"Since my girlfriend doesn't have the Lion CD, I'm downloading it and burning it onto a dual-layer DVD, everything is fine..."

Lion cannot be downloaded anymore, except from an account on the App Store, so where does this downloaded version come from?

Hello, if this message is a duplicate I'm sorry, I've already replied twice but the text doesn't display...

I downloaded it legally via torrent in ISO format...

But in any case, I also attempted an installation via the internet (option available at boot) and I encountered exactly the same issues. No formatting possible from the disk utility and installation stuck at the step of selecting the hard drive chosen for the OS installation.

In a Mac store, I was offered €50 for replacing the ribbon that connects the motherboard to the hard drive. I find that expensive but why not... I was explained that if it was in poor condition it wouldn't have enough power for the disk to be the target of an OS installation... What do you think?

Thank you for your reply in any case, have a nice day.

      Hello,

"I downloaded it legally via torrent in iso format... "

tss tss tss ! IMPOSSIBLE, legality goes through Apple and not through a "torrent", so there's no possibility of finding help on CCM.
