Very slow downloads on Steam

Hello,

I just tried to download Source Filmmaker on Steam, but the download is super slow, almost completely stopped.


I can reach a maximum speed of 7mb/s right now, but I'm often around 2/3 mb/s or even 900 kb/s.

Yet my connection is about 290/300 mb/s for download and around 100/110 for upload, with latency between 1 and 2 ms.

Do you think the problem could be on my end or is it the Steam servers?

And if the problem comes from Steam, I would just like to know if it's because the Steam servers are low quality or if they are just overloaded? But being overloaded at 2:00 AM is quite surprising.

    Hello,

    Several factors can be at play.

    If you are already a customer of Orange... running a "speed" test on an Orange server is a bit "easy" to get good results; you should test with other servers.

    Finally, it's worth noting that Steam has pipes of varying sizes with different operators, and if the pipe is full/saturated, customers will experience very poor speeds to/from Steam, especially when everyone has fiber.

    So, I wouldn't be surprised if the problem comes from "Steam," especially if the speed tests remain consistent and are similar for "direct" downloads.

    And see how long it takes and what average speed it downloads at through your browser to find out.

      140 mb/s download in Tokyo but with insane ping


      and about the same result as with Orange but with Bouygues this time

      so I think it's really Steam that's the problem

      Hi, I would add that you shouldn't confuse Mb/s (megabits/sec) and MB/s (Megabytes/sec). Megabyte is the English term for Mégaoctet (Mo)

      Basically, the speed in Mb/s needs to be divided by 8 to get the download speed in MB/s

      According to the speed test above, the approximate download speed in MB is
      293.7 / 8 = about 36.7 MB/s normally.

      Just to avoid confusion ;)
