Tomtom blocked and red cross on startup

I wanted to connect my TomTom to my computer via TomTom Home without success, which has led to another problem.

Since this attempt, the GPS no longer starts and I see a screen with a flashing red cross on startup if I turn on the GPS without being connected to the computer.

If I am connected to the computer, the red cross disappears and the cable symbol reappears on the screen.

I have consulted the TomTom FAQ:

1- I tested the reset button with a paperclip under the device - without success
2- I verified that the PC correctly recognizes the GPS as a removable storage device (see file panneTomTom1.jpg)

TomTom Home does not recognize my device at all, regardless of the TomTom Home version (1.400 or 1.5). I always get the error message: "Please connect your TomTom" or "The TomTom connected to the computer is not compatible."

What should I do to resolve my problem?
Is there any hope that I can resolve this issue on my own, or should I consider a factory return?

Thank you in advance for all your tips,
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 7.0

Hello everyone and thank you for your guidance through your replies. However, I had still asked TomTom customer service why this cross had appeared and here’s what they replied, which is in other terms identical to Redbart's version that works very well!

Here’s what we advise you to do to solve the issue of the frozen screen on your TomTom:

1. Make a backup of your TomTom using the TomTom Home application:
www.tomtom.com/home

2. Click on the "Remove items" menu in TomTom Home; then remove the application by checking the box on the right side of the line and then clicking "Remove items".

3. Completely close the TomTom Home application, including from your Windows taskbar if you have the software icon. Right-click with your mouse and then select "Quit".

4. Reset your device using a paperclip in the reset hole as follows:
www.tomtom.com/6969

5. Your TomTom will turn off, connect your TomTom directly to your computer with the USB cable.

6. Turn on your TomTom once it is connected to your computer by pressing the power button for 5 seconds.

7. If the TomTom Home application opens, you can close the application.

8. Select the "Start" menu in Windows and then "My Computer". Your TomTom is listed under removable drives.

9. Double-click on the icon of your TomTom to display the contents.

10. Delete all files that are not contained in yellow folders.

11. Open the TomTom Home application again and click on "Add Maps, Traffic, Voices, etc." and then on "Items on my computer".

12. Then click on the plus sign in front of the line "Applications" and click the "Add" button.

Note: Before disconnecting your TomTom from your computer, in TomTom Home, select "Device" and then "Disconnect device".

A thousand thanks for your troubleshooting message!
I was starting to despair with this GPS.
Actually, I have the impression that there is a bug in the installation of a file that we receive when we connect. I don't understand why the Tomtom technicians haven't resolved this issue. In any case, you really helped me out. Thanks again!
