Tomtom stuck after update

Question

Hello,
After trying to update, my GPS no longer works. When I turn it on, it freezes on the home page and I can't even turn it off; I have to reset it. If I go to TomTom Home, it is recognized, but I don't have any updates available (so it should be up to date). How can I unlock it?

Have you already made a backup? I suppose you have, so in the TomTom Home menus look for backup/restore and restore.

I have tried before, but it tells me that this feature is not supported by my device. What I find strange is that Tomtom home does not open when I plug in my GPS; I have to go find it in my programs.

It's not a problem that it doesn't open automatically.

Do you know if your mapping is intact?

Check in the workspace or on the computer depending on the OS, double click on the TomTom icon and see if you have the Europe or Western map in the list.

Good news, we need to copy the TomTom first:

Control panel, folder options, view, and check the box to show hidden folders, then return to the workstation, right-click on the TomTom icon to copy, go to the desktop and right-click to paste. Wait for the copy to finish.

Then, come back for the next steps.

Ok, keep it warm...

You reconnect the GPS to TomTom Home, in the Home menus you look for manage my device or a similar name, you will check (to delete), everything EXCEPT:

MAP and VOICE.

and delete.

Then you disconnect the GPS following the normal procedure and reconnect it, launch TomTom Home if it doesn’t open by itself and it will prompt you to install the application, you follow the instructions.

In my opinion, it will work again, you will just have to do the updates.

You absolutely risk nothing since you have your copy/paste on the desktop.

Yes
After deleting all the files (except maps and voices), I got a big red cross.
I reconnected the GPS and installed the app + update, I even did it twice.
When I look, I have the app + maps + voices + car icons + closure screen.
For your information, before I performed these famous updates, it was asking me for PC connection Yes / No but now not at all.

I just noticed one small thing, when the GPS is connected to the PC I can turn it off with the power button, but when it's not, it's impossible.

Have you restarted the PC? Which OS are you using? Which antivirus?

I am running Windows 7 and I have Microsoft Security as my antivirus.
Yes, when you had me delete the app, I had a big red cross, but it disappeared after I reloaded the app and the update.
I forgot to mention that in the beginning, I also tried to download
QuikGPSfix on Tomtom home, which I immediately removed; I don't think it had any impact but I prefer to mention it anyway.
Do you think I can format my GPS and reload it?
If yes, how can I proceed?

Quikgpsfix is used to detect satellites, you will need it, but it has no impact on the problem.

Anyway, you still have your complete copy on the desktop, absolutely do not delete it, it is your only backup, even if it's bad, it still contains the essential mapping. (otherwise, you will need to buy another one)

Your GPS behaves like a removable disk. You can format it by right-clicking on the icon in Computer and formatting it.

Then, you will copy/paste the Western Europe map back onto it and connect it to TomTom Home, again it will prompt you for the installation of the app, Quick and others..

Sorry, but it's still not working. I think I have a problem with the app because before downloading it, I can turn my GPS on and off with the M/A button, but as soon as it's downloaded, that's impossible; I have to reset it.

YES, that's right. When I restart it, the TOMTOM logo (two hands) appears, then a screen on the left and a very fast download bar; then it goes back to the TOMTOM display + logo and there it is stuck.

In TomTom Home, in the top left corner, you have the option to disconnect the device.  A message indicates that you can now unplug the GPS.  With the device without TomTom Home (if it opens, close it) connected to the computer, right-click on TomTom and format it. You only copy the Europe West map that you have in the saved folder, disconnect the device. Turn off the GPS, launch TomTom Home, connect and turn on the GPS, install what is offered, when the message appears, the GPS must restart, disconnect it from TomTom Home using the option in the top left corner, turn it off, turn it back on, it should be recognized by TomTom Home and the application ends. Disconnect it in the top left corner, turn it off and try it outside the computer. Last attempt:   To try:  - Device stopped, keep the start button pressed until the TomTom starts up when it displays a black screen with white writing (like on a PC). This may take more than 30 seconds; once on this screen, you need to press the start button until you hear the drum sound. or  Device stopped, keep holding the power button; it will start up and turn off while still holding the power button, then restart, and at the drum sound, you should release the start button. Throughout the process, the start button must be held down.  - Delete the mapsetting.cfg file (you should save it on your desktop, for example) and then restart the TomTom. If the issue persists, put this mapsettings file back in its place. - If there is a found000 file, delete it. I completed the process but did not see any improvement; however, I do not have the fond000 file. My girlfriend has an identical Tomtom start, but it only has France (instead of Europe); should I try formatting mine and copying her files? What do you think? If the problem persists, then it will be a hardware issue, even though it occurred during an update.

You can try, but in principle, it won't work.  Just make a copy of its files, do not cut them...  Knowing that you will need to install your own Europe map instead of France on a TomTom = a map...  If it really doesn't work, you will have to format your GPS and do a copy/paste of the backup that is on your desktop (I advise you to keep it in a safe place away from any manipulation, as the Europe map is essential for the GPS). (The TomTom Home application will launch: you can close it)   Then click on 'Start' (in Windows) and then on "Computer" or "This PC": your TomTom is listed under removable disks.  Right-click on the TomTom logo and choose 'Properties'.  Click on the "Tools" tab and then on 'Check now'. Hi I contacted Tomtom's support service to explain my problem, and they had me go through multiple manipulations (actually the same as yours) but still no results. After several days of trying, they asked me to send my GPS back, but since it was no longer under warranty, they charged me €75 for the repair. I was frustrated and ordered another one online for the same price. But since I'm stubborn (yes, I'm a Taurus), I kept bothering them because my GPS crashed while updating; I asked them if they could provide me with maps if I gave them my serial number. I should mention that in the meantime, I had copied everything I had from my new Tomtom onto the old one, and it seemed to work, except I kept getting a message saying it couldn't find any maps. The support service asked me to retrieve my maps from: Start / documents / Tomtom / Home / Backup / my device name (Start for me) / Backup01 / Internal memory and to copy/paste that maps file. I had serious doubts, but it works correctly (finally); so now I have 2 GPS, but I will try to sell one. Well, I hope all this can be useful to others. Thanks again for your patience and perseverance.
