Hard drive recognized, but formatting required

Hello,

My external hard drive (Toshiba 500GB) is recognized by my computer, but it asks me to format it; this happens on all the USB ports of my laptop. I have also tried it on other computers, and I have restarted my computer without success.
I would like to know if there is a way to recover the data knowing that it was working perfectly the day before.

Hello,

With the command prompt "cmd.exe" (search in the start menu for CMD)

Launch cmd.exe as an administrator by right-clicking on it -> Run as administrator

Enter the command CHKDSK /R /F X:

Replace X with the letter of the failing drive.

Normally, the formatting request that an OS sends means that the OS can no longer communicate with the drive because the format (the file system) of it has encountered some issues. By the way, great instincts with the tests you’ve conducted! Nevertheless, if you haven’t tested another USB cable yet, I suggest you do :) You never know.

If the USB cable works properly and is out of the suspect list, we could try accessing the contents of the HDD using either a Linux Live CD or an alternative data recovery software, just like the suggestions in this article mention https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-37640569-recuperer-des-donnees-sur-disque-dur-et-cle-usb

Once the data is recovered onto another storage medium, we could think about diagnosing the HDD itself and seeing the results to know its health status. To do this, using the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic utility would be an option.
