Hello,
I just got my computer not long ago and I'm not very tech-savvy ^^
I wanted to download something and to do that I needed to download WinRAR, which I downloaded, and then my computer asked me how to open it. There was a list, and I chose Windows Media Center from that list ^^' I don't know why x) and now every time I download WinRAR, Windows Media Center launches instead of WinRAR. How can I fix this so everything works normally, please? I hope I made myself clear :)
Thank you

Right-click on the file to open, open with, choose WinRAR (if it's not in the list, look for the .exe), set as default.
See you later!-

Hello,
Well, normally the desktop is not meant to store files (please avoid doing so whenever possible), and the desktop should not be the destination for downloaded files.
The Downloads folder or any other folder on your computer that is not the desktop or a system files folder (Windows, etc.) is meant for that.
To 'browse' your files, use the File Explorer. It can be accessed by pressing the Windows key (choosing 'File Explorer' from the pop-up menu that appears) or by opening any folder by double-clicking on it.
You can then right-click with the mouse/touchpad and specify which application should open which type of file.
By installing 7zip (and even during its installation), you can do this.
7zip has the advantage over WinZip and WinRAR of being free software and part of the open-source community (professionals who work without being paid by collaborating together on the creation and improvement of programs).
7zip allows you to compress or decompress several file archive formats.
Archive files (e.g., .rar, .zip, .tar, .gz, ...) are files that allow existing files to be compressed into archives. They become unusable, but the space they take up on the hard drive is reduced. On the Internet, this allows transferring files more quickly or even combining multiple files into one to avoid multiple sends/selections of several files.
In short, avoid WinRAR to choose better (and as much as possible Microsoft's software, which is commercial and intrusive on privacy) when there are free and open solutions often of better quality (e.g., Open and LibreOffice being far superior to the Office suite that inspired them).
You can find this type of software by using the right keywords on a web search engine and browsing the software section of this site:
