Hello,

I have some Word files that have been converted into Notepad format, and I can't read them. Does anyone know how to recover them (I hope it's possible!)?
Thank you.

Configuration: Windows 7 / Chrome 51.0.2704.103

Hello philippusmagister,

notepad”? Which one?
The Windows Notepad? The OneNote Notepad?

If you’re talking about OneNote files, you can use the command [File] | “Export” | “Word Document (*.docx)”.
For the Windows Notepad, you should be able to open them in Word.

But I doubt your files have gone into OneNote without some intervention ;-)

Hello,

Isn't it a problem with the .doc (or .docx) extension being opened with Notepad? Try opening these files directly in WORD, without using Windows to find the right application to open (Windows uses the file extension and keeps track of previous actions). If you can open them in Word, then the extensions are not assigned to the correct application.

See for example:

Excellent idea, fano59dk, the wrongly assigned extension.
In that case, a right-click on the file, "Open with," should offer Word.
But the wording of philippusmagister makes me think that not all of his Word files are affected.

Hello C-claire,
maybe it is a particular type of word file, for example .docx. So, philippusmagister received a word file and tried to open it like the other .doc files, but having WORD from before 2007, his Windows suggested to open it with the first application that came to mind, " Notepad." This extension issue needs to be clarified: ".doc", ".docx", ".odt", ...

Hello philippusmagister,

Like C-Claire, I also think that fano59dk had an excellent idea
regarding the misattributed extension. However, if that’s not it:

I find it strange that your Word file (*.docx or *.doc) has suddenly become
a notepad file (*.txt) all by itself. Normally, to do this, one must
explicitly request it using "Save As" and then choose the "Plain Text" format; additionally, right after that, it must specify the format: ◉ Windows (default) ○ MS-DOS ○ Other encoding

In any case:

a) You can read your file with Windows Notepad (notepad.exe);
you will notice in passing that the Word formatting has been
lost; but at least you should still have your text.

b) With Word: ^o => Open window; for the file type, instead
of "All Word documents," choose from the list, either:
"Text files" or "All files"; then select your
text file and click the "Open" button.

c) Right away, press < F12 >: "Save As" command; for the
file type, instead of "Plain Text" choose from the list:
"Word Document" and click the "Save" button.

d) You will need to restore all the formatting of your text;
good luck, as it is a long and tedious task!

Best regards. 😊

Yes, I agree with Albkan, there is also the possibility of a recording in a different format. The ambiguity lies in the "Word files": All? Some: which ones?

Indeed, others might have the same issue, this will avoid going back to delicate interpretations.
Best regards
