GPS ViaMichelin 970T and Vista

small update, the tutorial for Windows 7...

first install version 6.1 of the Windows Mobile device manager (nothing changes here :p)
and connect your GPS to the PC

1- click on start
2- click on devices and printers in the right menu
3- you will find a device not specified (with a yellow icon) at the bottom
4- right click, properties
5- hardware tab, properties (again ^^)
6- then in the new window, "change settings"
7- driver tab, click on update
8- select "search for a driver on my computer"
9- then "choose from a list of device drivers on my computer"
10- in the left dropdown menu select Microsoft
11- then "Windows powered pocket PC 2003" in the right dropdown menu
12- click next
13- a warning window appears, click yes
14- once the installation is complete you will be able to install via Michelin without any problem =)

PS: tested with the X980T new edition Europe.

I've found it... finally it works: viamichelin 970T on Vista 64bit tweaking... and I didn't find this method elsewhere, so this is the first explanation posted on this topic:

after numerous driver attempts, one of them works with the Via Michelin 570T and Vista 64bit...

previously, I installed:
- version 6.1 of the Windows Mobile device manager.
- I also installed the Vista 32bit drivers just in case but anyway (see the procedure to do it on the via Michelin site)

configure the USB connection as a pocket PC (yellow icon) then choose the Microsoft brand driver from the list present on the PC (do not do an auto search on the net): Windows powered pocket PC 2003

to reassure you or not, it seems that the GPS is communicating (GPS screen with a symbol indicating not to remove the SD card): it's normal but it still doesn't work! it's a pity and the Via Michelin driver with the Bibendum still doesn't appear (it never appears in 64bit configuration)

I don't know if this helps, but here’s what I did:
For my part, I retrieved the functioning driver file under 32-bit versions: wceusbsh.sys and copied it into the windows/system32/drivers folder.
By right-clicking on this file, a properties window appears with 4 tabs: go to the "digital signature" tab, click on Via Michelin that appears and click "details", then view the certificate and install the certificate. Follow the prompts, finish... and you receive a message indicating that the certificate is successfully installed... I don't know if this helps, but that's what I did.

You will notice that the certificate is obsolete ^^ original for a brand new product... I also temporarily changed the date on the PC for the certificate installation, just in case... then I set it back to the correct date.

Note: there should be a few restarts of the PC between the different installations

then, by chance, the connection occurred: but at least it's repeatable

GPS detection procedure:

you need to turn on the PC, connect the GPS, at this moment the PC detects the connection (icon Windows powered pocket PC 2003), ask to stop the USB device (icon usually in the taskbar with a USB symbol and a green tag), turn off the GPS. then turn it back on... repeat the process 3 times... then wait 5 to 10 minutes (I didn't time it because I was writing the text you're reading at the same time to check for repeatability) after this time, when reconnected, there is generally a small beep from the GPS and if it works, the Windows Mobile Device Manager (version 6.1) that you installed opens automatically and there you can install the Via Michelin DVD which has never been used... and follow the normal installation procedure...

upon starting the program once installed, I receive an error message saying that I have corrupted data... I don't know why, but it works and I was able to update the different items: radar, tourist routes... and even MP3s, so the link works quite well. (but thankfully it's not every day that one has to make updates)

and well after all that, you just have to place the content manager link on your desktop (it's up to you) and do your updates.

Important information: the driver for the ViaMichelin GPS 970T new edition with version 7 does not work under Vista 64bit, and the message from ViaMichelin is as follows:

A quick call to the hotline (quick response, surprisingly) to better understand the word "optimized" above, and the response was that the installation may or may not work.... (it's like a cannonball, it seems to depend on the wind)

I confirm that Vista 64bit and the GPS 970T do not communicate together even after downloading all the following:
- specific Vista driver that can be found on ViaMichelin (they are made for 32bit)
- copied the driver from a functional XP installation to the equivalent directory of my Vista 64bit installation: wceusbsh.sys
- installed the "Windows Mobile Device Center" 6.1 for Vista 64bit (the version 4.3 delivered that installs automatically under XP when launching the GPS navigation system installation program is of course not compatible with Vista 64bit (compatible with Vista 32bit, I don't know))

3 solutions: change GPS / 2 OS on the PC / wait

Changing GPS at major retailers, when asked if they have a GPS compatible with Vista 64bit, no one has the answer.... question too specific...

Maybe there’s a missing line between steps 9 and 10 of the tutorial: choose "mobile device."

If it doesn't work, consider uninstalling the GPS from the list of devices, unplugging it, and restarting the computer.
Be careful, you must go through the "devices and printers" menu to access the driver selection.

I have a X-970T New edition GPS, version 7. I can't install via Michelin on my PC: Windows 7 - 64. I've tried installing "device manager 6.1" and setting up my GPS "Windows powered pocket PC 2003", but when I launch my DVD to install via Michelin, I get stuck at the step where the installation wizard asks to check that the GPS is connected and powered on, with the SD card inserted... I get an error message: "Please connect your mobile device". At that moment, when I open the device manager, I can see my GPS "via Michelin navigation x970 T" configured with "wpp PC 2003".
Is it my via Michelin 7 version that is causing the issue??

I have ViaMichelin V4.3 Europe purchased in January 2006 and since the beginning of this year, having had to change my PC, I now have Vista. I have been waiting since February for a patch to be able to use my Pocket PC as a GPS. After several follow-ups, customer service is advising me to buy the 2007 Europe version for €159. This is a scam from Michelin; I do not intend to pay every year, especially since their software is very basic and the competition is far more efficient.

1. installed version 6.1 of the Windows Mobile Device Center from the Microsoft website,
2. this is where you come in: I made my GPS (970T) recognized as a Windows Powered Pocket PC 2003
3. I installed the DVD

I recently switched to Vista 64 bits and I thought for a moment that I would have to put my old Viamichelin X950 in the drawer with everything that is not compatible with Vista (which is really starting to frustrate me). no synchronization tool is installed with your mobile device.

Successfully tested on Win7 RC, thank you very much.

Two clarifications:

1 - after step 9, select "mobile device"

2 - for me, the content manager installed in the root C:\
to have it install correctly in C:\Program Files, I had to run the Setup.exe in Win XP SP2 compatibility mode.

First of all, thank you for finding a solution that seems to work!

Now, on my side, it doesn't work :p I have a Windows 7 RC1 and a ViaMichelin GPS 980GT Ne.

My GPS, once connected, is recognized by 7 as a Windows CE 5.0. I go through the steps until the driver update, but I have neither "windows powered pocket PC 2003" nor "mobile device"; however, I do have "mobile devices". There, I have a list on the left with "microsoft".

However, this list only offers me "WPD composite device" and "WPD file system volume driver". I take the first "WPD" thinking it means "Windows Powered Device"... After installation, my device _seems_ to work but I cannot access it, and furthermore, a message says "This device cannot start. (Code 10).

When I start the installation of the Content Manager, after several screens it tells me to check for the presence of my device and if I say it’s OK, I get a similar error message to the one CédricDu12 received: "no synchronization tool is installed with your mobile device".

What should I do...

After struggling with my PC, I finally got 2 "Mobile Devices," one for I-don't-know-what and the second that indeed offers the "Windows powered Pocket PC 2003"!

Indeed, my GPS is then connected via the "Mobile Device Manager" and everything works afterward (installing the Content Manager, etc.)

I've had Windows 7 for a week now and indeed some programs are hard to reinstall since I came from XP and not from Vista.
I've been struggling for hours to reinstall my ViaMichelin X970T Europe GPS.
I've tried all your tips, but nothing works.
I must have a conflict somewhere.
As for me, the Windows Mobile Device Center does not detect anything, yet the GPS screen has indeed switched to synchronization mode with the usual little icon!!!???
As a result, when I launch the installation DVD, it tells me that no device is connected.
I've tried both solutions for the device manager: to recognize it as the correct GPS (VIA Michelin) or to recognize it as Pocket PC 2003. None of the solutions work.
I don't know what to do anymore.
Can someone help me?
