Forced to restart my PC after connecting a peripheral.

Hello,

I have a problem with my computer, and this has been going on since I bought it 6 months ago. It's really starting to annoy me.

Every time I plug in a device (game controller, USB stick, micro USB, mouse, etc.), I have to RESTART my PC! (turning it off and on doesn’t work).

It’s really frustrating: it doesn’t recognize any of the devices, even if they’ve been plugged in before and the drivers have been installed, it seems to forget as soon as I unplug the thing. However, the drivers are there since it doesn’t need to reinstall them when I restart.

The thing that surprises me the most: if I unplug a device when my computer is off, and then plug it back in, my computer doesn’t recognize it when I turn it back on... I still have to restart it.

I would really like a solution... If anyone has one!

Thanks in advance!

Hello.

How long has your PC been running Windows 10???

I think it's a software issue and not a hardware one.

We can try some basic troubleshooting, and if the problem persists, since your PC is 6 months old, return it to the warranty service, take advantage of it while you still have the guarantee ;)

What brand and model is the PC??

Thank you for your response.

I bought it when it was already under Windows 10... It's true that customer service is an option, but that means no PC at all during that time, which is quite inconvenient too ^^. That said, I thought about it, and if it's software as you say, I think it's the best option.

Otherwise, for the PC itself, here it is on Amazon! Where there is all the detailed information better than I could do ^^. Otherwise, I bought it at FNAC, but I doubt that would be of any use!

https://www.amazon.fr/Asus-Premium-R753UX-T4040T-Portable-GeForce/dp/B019H4B2HY/ref=sr_1_16?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1467577755&sr=1-16

Yes, for the Amazon or FNAC link, it's the same, as long as I have the details of the PC ;)

So, a stupid question that I imagine you've already tried.
Plug into all the USB ports, and especially prefer the USB 2.0 ports for the mouse and controllers.
And the USB 3.0 for USB keys and external hard drives to gain transfer speed.

Then it must surely be a driver issue.
So let's try this.
You go to this site https://www.driverscloud.com/fr/demarrer
You install the agent (take the automatic one), it will adapt to your Windows, so in 64 bits.
Once installed, you will click on start detection
Then you will have a summary of your PC and its components.
You will go all the way to the bottom of the page and click on find drivers
And please send me a screenshot of all the drivers to update.

We will analyze which ones are important to update first.
We will install them.
You will test your PC to see if the problem persists.
If yes, we will move on to control manipulations on the state of Windows 10.
And possibly some antivirus scans, you never know...

And then, well, I will be out of ideas, and the customer service will unfortunately be necessary if we don't resolve this, and the deprivation of your PC will sadly be there too...

There you go, I'm vaguely laying things out for you..

Thank you very much for your help. Given what you gave me, I have everything to update!

(The Fitbit base station is a USB thing that works really well when I restart my computer ^^).

The Fitbit is not recognized if you plug it in while the PC is running.??
You have to reboot the PC for it to be recognized.??

For the drivers, you need to download the Realtek PCI card.
And install it.
And reboot the PC even if it doesn’t ask you to.

And the Logitech USB, is that a wireless mouse?!?
If so, no need to update it.

But as I suspected, many drivers are outdated, but none are actually related to USB.

Afterwards, we'll check in the device manager to see if there are any yellow triangles.
And do a little msinfo32, we'll see what it tells us.
And take a look in the event viewer.

None of my devices are recognized when I plug them in while the PC is running (or even when it's off). That's precisely my problem. Well, it does recognize them, knows they are there, but it's as if it doesn't have the drivers, even though it does... Since I already went through the hassle of installing them.

I'll do that tonight, thanks for your response!

We'll eventually find a solution.

We'll also need to try something else.
For example, a USB drive with music on it.

Simply plug it in and try to play the music through your media player.

If it works without needing to reboot the PC, we can isolate the hardware issue.

But if a reboot is necessary, then we'll need to try your 4 USB ports and see if the problem is the same.

Well, sorry for the wait!

So I updated the driver, even though I'm not convinced it does much.

As for the music: my external hard drive has it on there, but if I plug it in without restarting my PC, it can't find it.

Regarding the device manager: bingo, there’s a triangle, no matter which USB port.

http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/242457Periph.png

If I want to update it:

http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/406946pilote.png

However, if I restart the computer, it works! And there’s nothing to do, no drivers to install, no updates to make.

Yet, it KNOWS that I’ve already configured it:

http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/410730Toshiba.png

Generally, I avoid unplugging it... I think it shows ^^.

As for msinfo32, I don’t know what that is...

So Windows is unable to associate the driver with your device (hard drive, etc.) even though it recognizes it...

We can try another thing, not sure it will work but it costs nothing.

You connect your external hard drive.
You go to the device manager.
You uninstall the hard drive driver.
You unplug the hard drive.
You reboot the PC.
And you plug your hard drive back in.
And Windows will reinstall it as if it was the first time you connected it.

Let me know what happens.

Because Toshiba hard drives and other brands generally are plug'n'play, in other words, ready to use without additional drivers or anything.

We'll look at msinfo32 after the steps.

If we solve the hard drive problem with this method, you'll do this with your other devices you connect that are acting up.

Well, Windows does nothing at all; it just doesn't recognize it. ^^

Windows is sometimes so intelligent that it would break three legs of a duck :P

Have you tried all 4 USB ports?!?

Because I can accept one faulty USB port, and at 990€ I hope Asus doesn't use low-end components.
But 4 faulty USB ports out of a total of 4, there I just don’t believe it.

So there’s a software problem..
Windows is throwing another tantrum.

You're going to try this.
Let's approach the problem from another angle this time.

Right-click on the Windows logo in the bottom left.
Select “administrative command prompt”
In the black window, copy and paste this.

sfc /scannow

And press the enter key to validate.

Just let the PC work quietly, it’ll take about twenty minutes.

And please give me the result of the scan at the end.

I'm going to do that.
And unfortunately, yes, the 4 ports... As soon as I plug in anything USB, no matter what, I have to restart. So I leave everything plugged in all the time. Believe me, I've tested it! (I paid more than €1000 for the damn thing!)

"Starting the system analysis verification phase. The 100% verification is complete. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. So that's done. The detail: https://textup.fr/170006XT (I hope the link works!)

I understand that it's frustrating.
Mine is worth €1200, it's three years old, but if I had regular bugs, I would be annoyed.
Fortunately, I have nothing to complain about, not a single issue.

Your USB devices, especially your external hard drive, do you think it has a virus??!?!
Because there are viral infections that can come through USB, and it messes up the PC...

We can also look into that.

Did your problem come up all of a sudden, or has it been like this since you got the PC?!!

Well, actually, I don't know. At first, I thought it was the antivirus that was blocking access, so I allowed access (by disabling USB device scans in Avast). But that didn’t change anything.

The problems appeared very quickly: from the start, I had to plug and unplug the device several times for the computer to finally recognize it. It’s been a while since I tried to see if that technique works.

Since your PC is running Windows 10 natively, I suspect there are some minor stability issues, for you it's the USB ports that are crashing.
For others, it's different bugs.

So you will do the following

Right-click on the Windows logo
select Command Prompt (Admin)

Copy and paste into the black window
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
confirm with the Enter key
let the PC work.

Once finished.
Copy and paste this
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
confirm with Enter.
Let the PC work again.

Once finished, reboot.
And do a
sfc /scannow

And give me the result please.

Then we will see some basic settings for the USB ports.
Even if I doubt the problem comes from there..

Always the same:

The 100% verification is complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files, but
was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the log
CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently
not supported in offline servicing scenarios.

The log output is being generated (moldy connection...)

So we already know that your W10 is a bit unstable...

You will give me the results of this operation

Windows key + R key
Type msinfo32
Press Enter.

Go to components
problem devices
and give me the results (screenshots if you can)
Then go to USB
and again give me the results

You should have at least 3 USB controllers listed.
2 Intel
and one Microsoft to manage your two USB 3.0 ports

It's so encouraging :p. Thank you for the time spent helping me!

For the manipulation:

If I decide to remove and reconnect peripherals:

And for the USB, it's just as you said!

Unfortunately, with recovery builders, it’s always hit or miss; it's so overloaded with useless software that even after deletion, traces remain..
Helping is good, but solving the problem is better ;)

So it’s really when you plug it in; other than that, everything is clean.
You will right-click on the Windows logo.
Select device manager
and you will check if you have about the same things as my red boxes
https://www.pixenli.com/image/EsMyd25D

You might even need to uninstall the USB drivers and reboot the PC for Windows to reinstall them.

If the problem persists, then we’ll need to pull out all the stops.
I checked the Asus site with your model reference, but didn't find any USB drivers, just for the sleep 'n' charge..
But that doesn't concern us regarding your problem..!!!

You have more in fact, but that's simply because each connected device adds a line in the manager ;)

So you're going to try this, it won't solve anything at all, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.
You double-click on each of your USB devices in the list you sent me.
Go to the Power Management tab
and uncheck the box Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
https://www.pixenli.com/image/QztxeEI8

Some of your USB hubs won't have the option, that's normal.

And then you'll right-click on the Windows logo.
Select Event Viewer
and there you will need to look for any error reports, corresponding to the USB crashes, referring to the time and date of the device connection.

If you can't find anything, unplug your devices, plug them back in, reboot.
And then check the Event Viewer to see if there are any traces of the bug or not..

If so, tell me the errors, or please take a screenshot.

Well,

I would really like to be able to close this post, it's been a while...

I didn't respond to the last message because I have to say it was seriously pissing me off to have to do all this to fix my computer. I bought it at an outrageous price, so why do I have to deal with this much hassle?

Since then, I've tried to reset my PC, but it's impossible because it can't restart after resetting everything; I have to turn it off and cancel all the changes.

I tried using the Windows refresh, which means reinstalling all of Windows, but guess what, it also bugged during one of the restarts and... I'm left with a half-empty shell! I have access to the BIOS and repair utilities (when it feels like it...) but since I no longer have an account, and no admin account, because the Windows refresh destroyed everything, I can't use the troubleshooting options... Great.

In short, this computer is a piece of sh*t.

I'm not looking for a solution; I honestly think it's a lost cause! But if anyone comes across this, don't try to reinstall Windows. ._ .

Lananelle Posted messages 94 Status Membre 6

And there you go, after tinkering with my BIOS, I managed to get a brand new Windows (and a computer that starts up strangely).

My devices are working normally (\o/), I think I can (finally) mark this post as resolved. Even if it's only been an hour and I don't know the consequences for my computer.

Solution: reinstall everything.
