Document opening: loss of captions, bibliography references

Hello,

I come to you in the hope of finding some help!
I recently discovered the bibliographic source tool, which is a lifesaver: thanks to it, I was able to efficiently reference my final report. The use of references has also been very useful for the captions of my figures.

So, after spending several hours entering my references, citing them in my report, captioning each table and each figure, and seeing that everything was working well, I closed my document and went to get a coffee.

Upon returning, I reopened my document and there: HORROR!!! Nothing exists anymore: I no longer have any captions, any references, any bibliographic sources!
I tested it in other documents; it's the same thing: no matter how much I reference everything, the next time I open my document, everything has turned into plain text...

I had encountered this problem before with the table of contents; I manually associated level 0, 1, 2, 3 with my titles, inserted my table of contents, and everything worked fine until I closed the doc, reopened it, and the indexing had disappeared. I managed to counter this by using text styles, and I had left the problem where it was.

Have you ever encountered this bug? Could you help me? I absolutely need these tools to work...

A thousand thanks and best regards,

diddlneo

Good evening,

I am very surprised because I have never seen such a thing. Such a bug would necessarily be documented and corrected by Microsoft.

I have a few thoughts:
- With which version was this document created?
- Was it not saved in Compatibility Mode?
- With which version was it reopened?

- I don't see any relation to the table of contents problem regarding how you manually associated levels...

- When a bibliography is created, a bibliography file (sources.xml) is automatically created with all the sources as they are created in the various documents. This file cannot just disappear like that. By default, it is located here:
C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Bibliography\Sources.xml
From Word, go to the References tab and click on "Manage Sources." Do you find your bibliography sources there?

- The caption feature as well as the cross-references rely on the insertion of fields. There is no reason for all the fields to disappear like that.

Are you sure you saved the latest changes?
Can you check if you have other versions?

There’s no shame in not knowing everything, but taking credit for someone else's work is the most contemptible thing... Please cite your sources!

Hello m@rina, thank you for your quick response.

It seems that my issue is resolved: I was working in an odt format, I switched to a docx format and I no longer have these problems with loss of bibliography and captions.
In my previous problem, the bibliographies still existed in the main list, but disappeared from the active list, so I had to add them again and re-cite them each time I opened the document.

I have no idea why this function was glitching with the odt format (could it be that compatibility mode you mentioned?). I've been using Word 2013 from the start. If you're interested in this problem I can provide more info,

Thanks a million anyway,

Best regards,

Hello

Oh yes.... ODT is the Open Office format, it’s not Microsoft.
And I always say that although we talk about compatibility between the two formats, there isn't and can't be complete compatibility, especially when using advanced features like bibliographies for example.

So, be sure to save your documents in the DOCX format which is the Microsoft Office format.

Great, thank you :) !
I feel relieved, I admit that I always had a bit of a tight heart with apprehension when it was time to open my document!
I’m marking the subject as resolved,
