Hello everyone,

I need advice, my father has a desktop computer running Windows 8 that is blocked. He started the Avast update and his computer is stuck on a black screen with the message "reboot and select boot device or insert boot media in selected device and press a key". I managed to get into the BIOS by pressing F8, but I don't know what to do!

Thank you

    Good evening,
First, verify that no USB key is connected. If it is, remove the key and restart.
Otherwise, before touching the BIOS, instead of pressing F8, there should be another option like "boot menu" with the F11 key (this depends on the PC, but it is often this key) and thus select the hard drive. If that works, you need to look in the BIOS to set the hard drive as the first boot place.

    Best regards.

I have a doubt that F8 isn’t working, I don’t remember if I tried it or not. Could you please give me the steps to follow with F8 and F11 if the latter doesn’t work? Thanks for your help.

    Good evening...

It may depend on the machines, F9 or F12... you don’t risk anything by trying them all, except you have to restart each time to try the next one!
You should tap the key AS SOON AS THE MACHINE IS POWERED ON!
    Regards,
    See you later
PS: if with F2 or Del you get into the BIOS (a "weird" screen), look for the "boot" tab and check if the hard drive is first.... otherwise, set it to 1st.

So I put or check if the hard drive is in first and then?

then you exit the BIOS (often with F10) and it should boot...
If you changed the order, you need to validate the change, otherwise unnecessary.

Okay, and what should I do if I only have access to the BIOS F11, please?

I don’t understand: you’re in the BIOS and you only have F11 available...?!

It seems to me that yes, but as soon as I go back to my father’s I’ll try F8

A brief summary, because I suppose from home you can’t connect until his machine is running...

"reboot and select boot device or insert boot media in selected device and press a key" = the PC can’t find the operating system to boot, either because the hard drive is dead, or it’s not connected physically, or it’s trying to boot from something other than the hard drive.
So, check that there are no CDs, DVDs, USB drives, memory cards... on the machine.
Then, enter the BIOS, usually with F2 or Delete(=Del), look in the tabs (main) if the hard drive is listed there, then look in the boot tab (startup) to ensure it’s first: if that’s the case, exit the BIOS (often F10...not always!) and, if something else is first, set the hard drive to come first in the boot order...then confirm the changes and exit the BIOS...then tell me! ;)
